Many teachers believe that the responsibilities for learning lie with the student. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (inform) in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or take an examination. The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Sometimes homework is returned {#blank#}3{#/blank#} brief written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, the student is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (responsibility) for learning the material assigned. When research {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (assign), the professor expects the student to take it actively and to complete it with minimum guidance. It is the student's responsibility to find books, magazines, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a university library works; they expect students, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (especial) graduate students, to be able to exhaust the reference origins in the library. Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students should not be too dependent on them. In the United States, professors have many other duties {#blank#}8{#/blank#} teaching, such as administrative or research work. Therefore, the time {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a professor can spend with a student outside of class {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (limit). If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.

    Last week, I watched a movie. I noticed an actress who has very good eyesight{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (play) the part of a blind lady. She played it so well that if you saw her{#blank#}2{#/blank#}the first time, you would think that she was blind. It seemed that this actress {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(spend) her time putting a little more effort into her career so that she could play the part that the{#blank#}4{#/blank#}actresses could not.

    Have you ever seen people digging a well before? They don't just stop{#blank#}5{#/blank#}they see a little drop of water. They put in a little more effort to ensure that they get plenty of water.

    A popular saying goes that. It is only {#blank#}6{#/blank#}average mind {#blank#}7{#/blank#} would do the same thing all the time but expect another result.”  All you need to do is put a little more effort so that you can expect a wholly different result.

    You have two options in life eitherto focus on what's lost {#blank#}8{#/blank#}to fight for what^'s left. Fighting for what's left is all about{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(forget) the past, putting on your armor of courage and {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (brave) and putting in that extra effort. Be better than the best you can be.

    December 16, 2013 was my birthday. It was the day {#blank#}1{#/blank#} my best friend left me. I remember it as if it were yesterday. It was also our Christmas concert. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(offer) a job in Colorado, my friend's father had to leave our city. And his family had to go with {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(he). Mr. Escalante, our old headmaster, brought her whole family up on the stage, and they made a big {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(announce) about how they {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(leave). After the concert ended, I was in a total mess. I felt as if I had made something torn out of my body that could never be {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(full) replaced. My best friend's name was Hannah Zona.

    Ever since I was a little girl, my family was always with the Zonas. We would go to the fair, did anything you could think of. {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(live) so close {#blank#}8{#/blank#} each other, we could always go to each other's houses after school. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}she is about 7 years older than me, we act like we are sisters. {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(word) can't describe how much I miss her. When she comes back to California, it's like we were never apart. Hannah Zona is the best friend you could ask for. No one could ever replace her and the love I have for her.

    One day, I was comfortably waiting for my flight with a good book to read when {#blank#}1{#/blank#} elderly lady was wheeled to our waiting area. I noticed the trouble she was having {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (try) to open a packet of nuts with her shaking hands. No one else was willing to meet her gaze (目光), so I {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (offer) to help. The lady was very grateful. We sat and chatted. The time came to board the plane. She could walk but needed some {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (assist), so I volunteered to help her and carry her bag.

    As I helped her get {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (settle), I noticed her “seat mate”, a businessman, looked a bit horrified at having to make the flight with her. He offered to change {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (seat) with me — and I agreed. We had a long chat. As we were entering another country we needed to fill out forms. I offered to fill {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (her) out because of her shaking hands. We landed and I needed to change planes, but I helped her first. The wheelchair she ordered was nowhere to be seen so we slowly walked to the gate {#blank#}8{#/blank#} her daughter was waiting.

    As a result, I had to run to catch my connection but, as I thought about the experience, I saw her {#blank#}9{#/blank#} my airport angel, a chance for me to hope that in the future when I'm in my eighties and traveling, someone will take the time {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (connect) with me.
