It was late spring when my mom and I were driving through the countryside. Back then I was 13 years old and always felt unhappy with Mom. However, little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.

A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose pleasant smell filled the car. Suddenly, in the middle of nowhere, my mom pulled over (靠边停车) . "What are you doing? "I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we'd be stuck there, so far from home. Fortunately, that wasn't the case. My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat. "It'll just be a minute," she called back through the open windows.

Impatiently, I cast my eyes towards the edge of the road before they settled on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home. I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed, as my mom reappeared empty-handed.

Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask, "Do you know someone there?" She shook her head. "Then what did you do with the flowers?" She smiled slightly, "I gave them to the receptionist (前台接待员) ." What?" She laughed at my confusion. "I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially those who haven't received any in a while."

I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we went on with our driving, I spoke again, "Did you leave your name? "To this she answered instantly, "No. Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me. "

Suddenly, still thinking about Mom's deeds, I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it, and we didn't know where the garage was. It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by (过路人), since we had seen so few along the way.

    I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day-a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance, I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen the minitsunamis(海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew how to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.

    Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my toy boa(俯伏冲浪板)on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastgard. My neighbor Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his body board, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.

    Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. Waiting for help wasn't a choice. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency-I'd never been trained as a lifeguard-but I didn't think twice about trying to save them. I supposed in a way I wanted to impress everyone: at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.

    Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I hold the boy and pulled him over my board. Moises moved the girl on to his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

    "Quick! Quick! Remove the motorcycles from the shop." someone yelled.

    Then a thick burning smell filled the air. When Tom opened the front door of their flat to check, a thick cloud of smoke greeted him. The motorcycle shop had caught fire and people were running and crying.

    Jane, who had been playing the violin in her room, hurried to the living room. They rushed out of the door and along the corridor (走廊) through the smoke.

    They were heading towards the stairway at the far end of the corridor when Jane suddenly stopped. She turned around and headed back the way they came. Tom had no idea what she was doing, but he followed her.

    Jane had suddenly remembered the lady in her 70s who lived next door to them, who they called Mackie. Jane began banging on Mackie's door, but got no answer. As the smoke thickened around them, Tom could see many of their neighbors—some still in their pyjamas (睡衣) —running for safety. The thought of fear crossed his mind.

    "She would have run for safety like everyone else!" Tom cried. However, Jane refused to give up. "I know Mackie's still inside." She said she was familiar with Mackie's daily routine and was certain she would still be sleeping. She pounded against the door. "Go downstairs. Go now! Go!"

"Are you sure you want to come with me?" My fifteen-year-old daughter couldn't miss the doubt in my tone. Nikki used to think exercise was similar to slow death.

But that day was different. "Yeah," she said, "I haven't spent much time with you lately." She wore her sweatshirt, took an oversized water bottle and looked at me expectantly.

"Okay, let's go then." Doubtful or not, I was grateful my teenage daughter still wanted to hang out with me.

Suddenly, I had visions of Nikki becoming my new workout partner. And we would build a whole new relationship based on our common love of exercise.

The ten-minute drive to the gym went smoothly. After we entered the two-story building, we found two treadmills (跑步机), side by side. I placed my water bottle in the holder, hung a face towel over the handrail (扶手) and took off my sweatshirt. Nikki's water bottle was too large to fit into the holder, so she set it on the floor and climbed onto her treadmill.

Stepping over to her, I told her how to control the treadmill. "You might want to fasten the safety key to your shirt," I instructed her.

"Why?"

"It'll protect you if you fall."

She rolled her eyes. "That's not going to happen."

I knew from experience that it was useless to argue with her. And really, I'd never actually seen anyone fall from the treadmill, so I figured she had a point. I increased my speed; she increased hers. Several minutes later, I noticed her eyeing the water bottle she'd set on the floor.

"Don't reach for that bottle while you're moving. If you need a drink, stop the treadmill first," I warned.

With an eye roll and headshake, she ignored me. She managed to hold the water bottle, if not gracefully, at least successfully. Maybe I wasn't giving her enough credit. Then I heard a loud thump (碰撞声). It took me a moment to realize that the noise wasn't coming from behind me but beside me.
