There have been homeless animals since a long time ago. Many animals find their way to animal homes. At the homes, some are adopted(领养), but some are very sick or old and they do not get adopted. Instead, these animals are sometimes killed in a proper way. In the 1980s, about seventeen million(百万) dogs and cats were killed each year in America. Today, the number is much smaller because of places like Best Friends.

Best Friends began in the 1980s. It was a place for" unadopted" animals to go. It was known as the sanctuary(避难所).The workers gave those animals the care they needed. They found homes for them. Some did not find homes. Those animals stayed at the sanctuary until they passed away. Best Friends hopes there will be "No More Homeless Pets" in the future.

Now, about two thousand dogs, cats, and other animals think of Best Friends as their home. The animals get the special care that they need. Trainers, caregivers and doctors care for the animals.

Many animals only need to spend a few weeks there. Good homes are then found for them. People who want to adopt animals should reach Best Friends. If they are kind to animals and promise to take good care of them, they can take them home.

(1)、What would happen to sick or old homeless animals before Best Friends began?
A、They would get special care. B、They would get adopted. C、They would be looked after by the government. D、They would be killed in a proper way.
(2)、If a person is allowed to adopt an animal from Best Friends, he must be _______________.
A、rich B、smart C、kind D、humorous

It was Saturday morning when I was six years old. Christmas was still three weeks away, but everyone in town was 1 . Santa Claus, the Father Christmas, was coming in our small Irish town.

The main street was full of children. They cheered 2 as the band passed by. Santa followed on a white 3 . He waved to the crowd while shouting, "Ho! Ho! Ho!" But just as he passed me, his beard (胡须)fell off.  That was when I knew Santa wasn't real and started to4 . Tears were welling up in my eyes.

The man on the horse was my dad.5 ,1 wasn't surprised. Dad was always the most popular person in our town. He sang in church, acted in the theatre and even 6 on TV

Thirty years later, my dad visited me in New York City. It was his 7 time in the United States, and he felt like a very excited child.Atdinner, he told me a story.

Back in the 1950s, my dad left school at the age of 16 to work in a small 8. One summer, his Uncle Ben came home from the US. He told Dad to go to America with him. But my grandma wasn't 9 with the idea. My dad was the only breadwinner in the family. In the end, he stayed and never left.

At that moment, I understood that Dad was once young. Father Christmas also had dreams. But he10 those dreams for______his family. What would he have become if he had gone to New York? Could he have become a famous singer, actor or dancer?

Sadly, dad just worked in that small factory for 40 years.

F. What attracted me most was the judge's box.

I was amazed by the 2024 Shanghai Longines Global Champions Tour (上海浪琴环球马术冠军赛).

After arriving at the equestrian (马术)centre, we first had a guided tour. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}In many sports, the judges' seats are usually placed in a point to help them clearly watch and score the performances. However, in equestrian events, judges often work from a single room, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} It can offer the judges a clear view of the competition.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}As we are interested in equestrian sports, we had a lot of questions: How do you keep a good relationship with a horse? {#blank#}4{#/blank#} They patiently answered all of our questions. They said if you treat the horse as a friend and trust it, it will do better in the competitions. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

Time flew and the wonderful journey ended. However, now, every time I think of it, I have a picture in my mind of a young boy racing with his horse, with a line of trust.
