Napoga is a 12-year-old girl in Ghana(加纳), Africa. It is hard for her family to get clean water. Every morning, she leaves home at half past five to get clean water for her family in a village far away. It takes her six hours to get enough clean water for daily(日常) cooking and drinking. She has no time to go to school or to play with her friends. Millions of people in the world are like Napoga. They can't get enough clean water to keep healthy.

Earth Day is on April 22. But on all other days, we must also remember it. The water we use is the most important natural resource(自然资源) on the earth.

Water covers 70% of the earth's surface(表面). But most of that is sea water. We can't use it for very many things. Fresh water covers only 1% of the earth's surface.

You probably feel lucky that your life isn't as hard as Napoga's. But that doesn't mean you don't have to worry about water. We all face serious water problems. One of them is water pollution. All kinds of things from cars, factories, farms and homes make our rivers, lakes, and oceans dirty. Polluted water is very bad for people to drink. And dirty water is bad for fish, too. Now, 34% of all kinds of fish are dying out.

How do cars and factories make our water dirty? First, they pollute the air. Then, when it rains, the rain water comes down and makes our drinking water dirty. Dirty rain, called acid rain(酸雨), is also bad for plants, animals and buildings.

Scientists say that in 30 years, more than half of the people in the world won't have enough clean water. We have to learn how to save more water for ourselves and our children. Here is some advice for saving water:

●Turn off the water while you brush your teeth. You can save as much as 450 liters(升) each month.

●Leaky taps(漏水的龙头) waste a lot of water. Fix them right away!

●You can easily cut your 10-minute showers(沐浴) in half—and you'll be just as clean.

●When you wash dishes, don't let the water run.

●Only wash clothes when you have a lot to wash. If your washing machine isn't full, you're wasting water!

(1)、Every morning Napoga went to get clean water _______.
A、before she went to school B、after she finished school C、without going to school D、after she played with her friends
(2)、Acid rain _______.
A、is only bad for living things B、can be produced in factories C、doesn't do harm to people, but it's bad for plants, animals and buildings D、doesn't just do harm to human beings but to animals, plants and buildings
(3)、Which of the following wastes(浪费) water?
A、We need ten minutes if we want a clean shower. B、We should put in enough clothes when we wash them in washing machines. C、You can keep yourself clean by having a shower for five minutes. D、Don't let the water run when we brush our teeth and wash dishes.
(4)、What's the main idea of the passage?
A、Something must be done to prevent water from being polluted. B、Clean water means much to human beings and living things around us. C、It's time to take care of the water we use. D、Water is the most important natural resource on the earth.
举一反三
Thinking is something you choose to do as a fish chooses to live in water. To be human is to think. But thinking may come naturally without your knowing how you do it. Thinking about thinking is the key to critical(批判性的) thinking. When you think critically, you take control of your thinking processes(过程). Otherwise, you might be controlled by the ideas of others. Indeed, critical thinking is at the heart of education.
The word “critical”here has a special meaning. It does not mean taking one view against another view, as when someone criticizes another person for doing something wrong. The nature of critical thinking is thinking beyond the easily seen--beyond the pictures on TV, the untrue reports in the newspapers, and the faulty reasoning.
Critical thinking is an attitude as much as an activity. If you are interested in life and want to dig deeper into it, you are a critical thinker. If you find pleasure in deep thinking about different ideas, characters, and facts, you are a critical thinker.
Activities of the mind and higher-order reasoning(推理)are processes of deep and careful consideration. They take time, and do not go hand in hand with the fast speed in today's world: fast foods, instant coffee, and self-developing film. If you are among the people who believe that speed is a measure(尺度)of intelligence(智慧), you may learn something new from a story about Albert Einstein. The first time Banesh Hoffman, a scientist, was to discuss his work with Albert Einstein. Hoffman was too nervous to speak. But Einstein immediately made Hoffman feel comfortable by saying, “Please go slowly. I don't understand things quickly.”

Some experts say that robots will take away human jobs with the rapid development of AI. A March 2023 report from Goldman Sachs showed that AI could do a quarter of the work done by humans. Across the European Union and the US, the report further notes that 300 million jobs could be lost to automation (自动化).

Thankfully, it's not all bad news. The experts also add that there are still things AI cannot do. These tasks have clear human qualities, like emotional intelligence and creative thinking.

"I think there are generally three kinds of jobs that are going to be safe," says Martin Ford, writer of Rule of the Robots: How Artificial Intelligence Will Transform Everything. "The first would be jobs that are creative enough to come up with new ideas and build something new."

The second is jobs that require complicated (复杂的) interpersonal relationships. Ford points to nurses, businessmen and reporters. "These are jobs," he says, "where you need a very deep understanding of people. I think it'll be a long time before AI has the ability to interact (交流) in the kinds of ways that really build relationships."

"The third safe one," says Ford, "is jobs that really require lots of mobility (机动性) and dexterity (灵活性) and problem-solving ability in unpredictable environments. These are the kinds of jobs where you're dealing with a new situation all the time, so they are probably the hardest of anything to automate."

"It's important to note," says Ford, "that a higher education or a high-paying position is not a protection against AI takeover. In short, looking for roles in changing environments that include unpredictable tasks is a good way to stop jobs from being taken by AI. At least, for a while."

From April 12 to 17 this year, the Dai people celebrated their biggest event: the Water Splashing Festival.

There are more than one million Dai people in China. Most of them live in Yunnan Province. They hold the festival every year for three to seven days in mid-April. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
