When we are learning a new language, carrying on a conversation can be difficult. It is even harder when there is the added pressure of doing a job well using the new language. One of our readers, Emre, works at a job that requires him to talk with customers in English. He recently asked for advice on how he can improve his listening skills.

Predict

The first strategy is to predict what you will hear. Maybe your customers sometimes say they have problems with placing an order on your website.What words do they often use in that kind of conversation? For example, customers may often use the word "order".

Focus

The next strategy is to prepare a list of those words and listen for them when a customer begins talking with you. The next time you are listening to a customer, pay attention to the key words that help you understand their question.

Ask

Next, think about what you can say to the customer to let them know you need a little help understanding them. You can let the customer know you are an English learner.

 At the beginning of the conversation, you can ask, "Would you please speak more slowly?" The other kind of question is one I call, "asking to clarify." Remember, you predicted some of the words your customers may use. You should listen closely for those words. When you hear one, you can ask the customer a short question to be sure. "Did you say you want to order?"

Rehearse

You can prepare your answers to customers' questions and rehearse them in your free time. You can practice saying them out loud to yourself.

A. I call this "focusing when you listen".

B. There are two questions you can ask.

C. You can list some common questions.

D. Here are four strategies for you to consider.

E. Customers are advised to concentrate on the key words.

F. You may want to keep a notebook with your usual answers.

G. You can think about the ways they usually ask about that problem.

    People who are confident really seem to be naturally outstanding and just seem to do everything with more styles than others.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} It is a habit that everyone can develop in life. Try these simple tips to drill and build up your confidence:

    Do not try to flee from them or cover them. Face them bravely.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Fight against them every day until the day when you could break away and conquer them.

2)Dress for self-confidence.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} And therefore pay attention to your dress, display your unique physical advantages and exhibit your best image. In addition, on formal occasions such as a business conference or a wedding ceremony, elegant dressing contributes to building your confidence.

Evaluating Sources (来源) of health Information

    Making good choices about your own health requires reasonable evaluation. A key first step in bettering your evaluation ability is to look carefully at your sources of healthy information. Reasonable evaluation includes knowing where and how to find relevant information, how to separate fact from opinions, how to recognize poor reasoning, and how to analyze information and the reliability of sources. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Go to the original source. Media reports often simplify the results of medical research. Find out for yourself what a study really reported, and determine whether it was based on good science. Think about the type of study. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Watch for misleading language. Some studies will find that a behavior "contributes to" or is "associated with" an outcome; this does not mean that a certain course must lead to a certain result. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Carefully read or listen to information in order to fully understand it.

    Use your common sense. If a report seems too good to be true, probably it is. Be especially careful of information contained in advertisements. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Evaluate "scientific" statements carefully, and be aware of quackery(江湖骗术).

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Friends and family members can be a great source of ideas and inspiration, but each of us needs to find a healthy lifestyle that works for us.

    Developing the ability to evaluate reasonably and independently about the health problems will serve you well throughout your life.

A. Make choices that are right for you.

B. The goal of an ad is to sell you something.

C. Be sure to work through the critical questions.

D. And examine the findings of the original research.

E. Distinguish between research reports and public health advice.

F. Be aware that information may also be incorrectly explained by an author's point of view.

G. The following suggestions can help you sort through the health information you receive from common sources.

    Speaking in public is most people's least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It's just plain talking, and you talk all the time. Although I'm basically shy (honest!), I've been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years, and I can tell you that public speaking is not a “gift” like musical talent.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Here are some of the lessons I have learned:

    Your audience is going to come away with one or two of your main ideas. One or two. Not ten or 20.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} And if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to say, there's no way your audience will.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}— how you are going to open, what major points you want to make and how you're going to close.

    When I do a radio or TV piece, I often write the last sentence first.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} A strong close is critical: the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember.

    The standard length of a vaudeville (杂耍) act is usually 12 minutes. If all those performers singing and dancing their hearts out couldn't go on longer without boring the audience, what makes you think you can?

A. Some people are born to be good at making speeches.

B. Anybody who can talk can speak in public.

C. Try to relax yourself before making the speech.

D. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become.

E. If you can't express in a sentence or two what you intend to get across, then your speech is not focused well enough.

F. When you know where you're headed, you can choose any route to get there.

G. No matter how long or short your speech is, you've got to get your ducks in a row.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. People think differently from me.

B. It taught me disagreements are unnecessary.

C. It took a lot of listening, patience and effort.

D. The comment was focused on my upbringing.

E. He then asked what l would be studying here.

F. I was excited and terrified but tried to act bravely.

G. In a way, I'm thankful that I had to take those extra steps from the first day.

    I am a Korean-American growing up in Korea. My delayed first day at Wheaton College was my first time in the U.S. in more than 10 years.

    From my first time eating at Chipotle to the endless variety of Scotch tapes on display at Target, culture shock affected me deeply. I was flooded with the rush of Starbucks caffeine (咖啡因). {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    On that first day to-do list was a job interview for a worker position. The interviewer asked where l was from. Seoul. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} English literature. He said, "Oh, you must be enthusiastic about coming all the way here to study English from Korea'!"

    That comment annoyed me, in a way I couldn't describe then. It's clearer now: {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The interviewer was measuring my passion without knowing anything about me, only based on where l was coming from.

    That interview was a small example of what came after that first day of college, but I hesitate to tell the story because some people who made ridiculously ignorant (无知的) comments ended up being my good friends. This wasn't easy. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Through them, I learned to express my feelings clearly in words. To them, I owe this story.

    We get to know some people and others we don't. We make decisions to involve in conversations or not. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} otherwise, I would have stayed in my bubble, meeting only people who say things that sound right.

    We know that choosing a college major can be extremely hard. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. However, it is a challenge to pick one when it feels as if the rest of your adult life is riding on that choice. It is a big commitment, but it's not a life sentence. Many graduates pursue careers that aren't directly related to their college majors, or change careers after several years. You may choose to base your decision on any of these factors:

    Dream job

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Maybe you already know that you want to be a nurse, a day trader, a physician, or a web developer. Before you declare, take a class or two in the relevant discipline, talk to students in the department of your choice.

    Great ambition

    According to PayScale.com, the majors that lead to the highest salaries include just about any type of engineering, actuarial mathematics, computer science, physics, statistics, government and economics. Keep your quality of life in mind, too.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

    Some students choose a major simply because they love the subject matter. If you love what you're studying, you're more likely to fully engage with your classes and college experience. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. If your calling is philosophy, don't write it off just because you're not sure about graduate school, or what the job market holds for philosophers.

A. Love project

B. The academy of the School

C. Many schools offer hundreds of choices

D. Science is a specific subject that college students specialize in

E. That can mean better grades and great relationships with others in your field

F. That seven figure salary may not be worth it if you're not happy at the office

G. Some students choose a major because it will prepare them for a specific career path or advanced study

Maybe in the near future, driverless cars may become common on the roads. Driverless cars have already been test-driven thousands of miles. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} For instance, it helps reduce the number of accidents and traffic jams.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}That is because there are many issues that must be solved before the widespread use of them. One problem is that a driverless car cannot predict problems far down the road like a driver can. The driverless cars react to an emergency only when it actually occurs. For instance, a driver starts to slow down when he sees a child riding her skateboard directly into the road 0.2 km away. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Driverless cars are not suitable for extreme weather conditions. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}They don't predict or "feel" that the roads have become icy like an experienced driver would. For instance, when a road is icy, a human driver would step on the brakes more gently than when the roads are clean and dry.

Another issue is that driverless cars have maps programmed into their memory, but these maps aren't always updated and accurate. New roads are built, and old roads are closed down. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Perhaps one day, driverless cars will be everywhere, but we are not ready for that just yet.

A. The safety problems have almost been addressed.

B. However, they are not yet available for the public.

C. Many advantages can be associated to the driverless cars.

D. Driverless vehicles also have trouble adjusting to new roads.

E. They may become confused by fog, heavy rain, or heavy snow.

F. Due to this, a driverless car may get passenger to the wrong destination.

G. But the driverless car only takes action when the child is in its immediate path.
