Our community library decided to offer a painting class. I told my friend Ella, and we both signed up.

On the big day, our first 1 was to paint a white vase of cheerful yellow sunflowers against a blue background.

We were asked to paint our canvas (画布) 2 . It was easy to follow the instructor to move the brush. Although I had never painted before, I could tell I was a 3 . I started thinking about where I would hang my new masterpiece.

Immediately after that, however, I began to run into 4 . The first curved (弯曲的) line of my vase looked perfect, but when I painted the line on the opposite side, my hand slipped (打滑). I tried to 5 that white streak (条痕) with blue paint, but it didn't work.

While I was busy fixing my messy painting, the instructor explained how to paint the sunflower leaves. Things went downhill fast after that. My leaves looked like fat, green caterpillars (毛毛虫). When I failed to clean my paintbrush, I accidentally made the sunflowers green. I felt 6 when I saw how good everyone else's paintings looked.

Ella sweetly praised my sunflowers, perhaps feeling sorry for me. When I said that hers were much better, she looked surprised. "No, they're not. I messed up in at least five places." After a few seconds, she asked, "Want to 7 paintings?"

Until that moment, I had felt only dislike for my painting. And yet for some reason, giving it away felt wrong. It wasn't a perfect painting, but it was mine—the first one I had ever created. I knew Ella must have realized that she felt the same way when she suddenly shook her head and said. "Never mind."

My sunflower painting still hangs directly above my bed. I often look at it. Every time I look at it. I 8 . It always brightens my day and brings warmth to my room. I really like it now.

I'm Kevin, a student of Grade 9. Most of my friends walk to school, but I like to ride my bike each day. I wake up at 7:00. After I wash my face and eat breakfast, I throw the schoolbag on my back. Do I have my books and homework? Yes, I do.

I take my bike, jump onto it and ride to school at 7:30. "See you later, Mum," I say.

I pass my friends when I ride by. "Hi, Kevin!" they greet me when I pass. Mary does not want to ride with me. She does not like to carry a schoolbag. She likes to carry her books in her arms when she walks. She likes to kick the autumn leaves. But she likes to look at the flowers best.

Not me! I like to ride my bike to feel the fresh air in my face. When I get to school, I lock my bike in the bicycle park. I walk across the sports field to say hi to Mr Brown and wait for my friends in our classroom.

As a funny student, Brian loved watching comedies best and hoped to become a comedy actor one day. When he 1 the talent show to be held at this school, Brian decided to take part in it. 

He had 2 acted in public before, so he was very excited. But some students 3 him." You are not funny b u t 4 ." Ken, one of his classmates, said." No one will like what you do," another boy also said to him loudly.

 Brian couldn't 5 why they were so unkind to him. For a moment, he thought about giving up the show. But he remembered 6 his friends liked his jokes, and also his teachers said he was very funny. So he decided to preparc for the 7 .

 Brian did a great 8 at the talent show. Everyone loved his performance, and he won the first prize! His teachers and friends were proud of him and said he would be 9 in the future. Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny. Brian didn't understand why Ken said so, but he realized that it had 10 to do with him. He 11 continued to work toward s his dream.

 As the years went on, Brian met more people like Ken. Luckily, most people 12 him and some helped him to become even 13 . He got a lot of chances to perform in movies. He was even invited to appear on television.

 Now Brian is a famous comedy 14 ! He is doing what he loves best. He never feels worried like those unkind people, and he laughs all day long!

 Remember the bottom line is that you can't let the behavior of others 15 your joy. Focus on being the best and happiest that you can be— that's where your energy should go.

If you have no special plans for your holidays, why not spend your time helping others?

Some people say that young people today often think only of themselves. It's not true at all, more and more young people in the USA volunteer (当志愿者) to spend their school holidays working for others. And they don't do it for money. Here are some of their stories. 

Alice Hamilton, 17

I'm going to help the Forest Center build new hiking paths (徒步小径) in the mountains. It's going to be wonderful. I will spend the whole summer living in a tent (帐篷) and breathing the fresh mountain air. I'm going to sleep under the stars. It will be a nice sport, and I will be able to do some- thing good at the same time!

Jason Moore, 18

This summer I'll volunteer with Special House Program. They build good, low- cost houses and sell them to the poor. They'll teach me what to do, so I am going to help people and also have a chance to learn how to build houses. 

Trish Anderson, 16

I'm going to teach children who have difficulty in reading. I'll work for a program called Reading for Life. Every day, I'm going to help children choose and read books that they like. I want to be a teacher and I love children and reading, so this is going to be a great experience for me. 

Mary had a nice summer vacation last year. She went to Hawaii （夏威夷） in July. Mary likes fruits, and the Hawaiian bananas and oranges were great. The weather was very fine, but sometimes it rained heavily. On Monday she went to the museum. It was an interesting place and not very crowded （拥挤的）. On Tuesday she went to the mountains. On Wednesday she visited an old friend. They went to the movies in the evening. 

The movie was so funny that they laughed again and again. On vacation she felt like that she was a flying bird！The vacation cost （花费） her about 600 dollars, but Mary had a fun time. 

Helen Smith comes from Canada. She is 1 sports star. Her birthday is 2 December 1st She 3 four friends. They are Alice. Dale, Eric and Helen. Helen wants 4 sports with them on weekends. 5 every weekend she goes to the club at seven in the morning. Then she plays basketball with them. She plays basketball 6 . In the afternoon, they play ping-pong for two hours. She goes home at 5: 00 p. m. She 7 eating some fruits and vegetables for dinner and two 8 a day. After that, she does 9 homework and goes to bed before 10 p. m. She is  10  and happy.
