Way back in 1674, a frog helped Antoni van Leeuwenhoek make an incredible discovery. Antoni was an amateur scientist from Holland, so fascinated by microscopes {#blank#}1{#/blank#} he'd built some of his own. One rainy day, as he went for a walk, a leaping frog {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(draw) his attention to a puddle.

    Antoni collected a drop of puddle water and put it{#blank#}3{#/blank#} his microscope. He was amazed{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (see) a whole community of creatures swimming in this one drop — tiny beings no one had ever seen before.

    These tiny beings, called microbes, are everywhere: in dirt, in food and on your kitchen table. People {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (cover) in them, too.{#blank#}6{#/blank#} you were to count all the microbes on and inside your body, you would find your body has more microbes than the world has people — over 6 billion!

    Microbes can't survive on {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(they) own. They need food. After {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(settle) into a home — you, for instance — they steal vitamins and other nutrients and leave behind dead cells and poisonous liquids called toxins. Some microbes can make you sick. People usually call these ones germs{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (lucky) for you, there are more {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (help) microbes, working together to keep you healthy, than bad ones.

    For thousands of years, fishes {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (feed) the people of Peru. It was only when the industrial fishing boats got started in {#blank#}2{#/blank#}1950s that people lost interest in the fish. Modern fishery turned most of its catch into fishmeal(鱼饲料) for feeding other animals. In fact, most of the fish {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (catch) yearly around the world are for use other than eating, and 90% of them are {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (perfect) good to eat.

    White is a researcher at the University of British Columbia and he spent years {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(research) into fishery catches around the world. According {#blank#}6{#/blank#} his study, about 27% of ocean fish which were caught became fishmeal or fish oil. Those products were used to feed farmed fish or used in agriculture.

    “There could be a {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (good) use of these fish,” says White. Instead of feeding fish to fish, the fish could feed people, especially those {#blank#}8{#/blank#} need high-quality protein. But the reason why that doesn't happen is a {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (combine) of economics and regulations(法规). In many places, a fisherman can get more money if he sells his catch for fishmeal than if he sells it to the locals for {#blank#}10{#/blank#} meals. And in Peru, a change in how fishes are handled could both satisfy the need to feed the people and supply the fishmeal industry.

    You may not know the name John Smith Pemberton, but you must know the name of his{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(invent):Coca-Cola.

    Pemberton was a US chemist. When he was wounded in the Civil War, lie used medicine to ease the pain and gradually got{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (addict) to it. To light the addiction, he created his own drink by{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (use) leaves of coca and nuts of kola. He named{#blank#}4{#/blank#}," Pemberton's French Wine Coca". In 1887, Pemberton sold part of the stock of his company to As a Candler,{#blank#}7{#/blank#}later created the Coca-Cola Company.

    Nowadays. Coca-Cola has become one of the most popular{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(drink) in the world. The company only offers semi-finished products to partners and won't sell the{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(origin) ingredients (成分).Its secret recipe was kept in the Sun Trust Bank in Atlanta for 86 years until the end of 2011.
