Captain Nemo seemed very sure that that savages could not harm us. I slept well. When I went outside the next morning, I saw that there were many more natives on the beach. It was low tide, and many of them had come quite close to the Nautilus. I asked Conseil to get a net, and we used it to get some shells from the water. They were very pretty shells. Suddenly, I saw a very rare and beautiful shell. We looked at it together. One of the savages threw a stone at us and broke the shell. Conseil was very angry. He fired his gun at the savage. Then, we noticed that the savages had come very close to the Nautilus in their canoes. A few moments later, they began to shoot their arrows at us. We went inside and told Captain Nemo about it. He ordered his men to close the doors.

    “But what will happen tomorrow?” I asked. “You will have to open the doors to get more air, and the savages will come in.”

    “Do you think they will dare?”

    “I am sure they will.”

    “We have nothing to fear,” he said again.

    Captain Nemo asked me about our trip to the island. I told him what we had seen and done. We talked about another French sailor called D'Urville, whose ship was wrecked in the Torres Strait. He told me again that the high tide the next day would lift the Nautilus off the reef.（选自《海底两万里》）

    Daisy is an American high school student, and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up. It's important to start early if you want to become a doctor. Why? In the USA, you will need to take some science classes in college or university before you attend medical schools. Besides schoolwork, medical schools, medical admissions. (录取）will also look at your extra﹣curricular (课外的) activities.

    To attend medical schools, Daisy decides to do as follows. First, she will visit the school library weekly and read articles about medicine. Then, she will meet with some doctors from her friends' families. Daisy is going to ask them some questions about their work, so she will get some useful information. Daisy also plans to volunteer at a hospital for a week. If you would like to help others, you will be welcome to medical schools Daisy is sure about this.

    The good news is that Daisy is 16 years old, so she can do the training to become a Certified Nurse (执业护士助理). She is going to finish doing this in three weeks during the summer. When you become a CNA, you can make good money. But to Daisy, it just helps her improve herself and makes her a better student before going to the medical school.

    As a high school student, Daisy knows what is the most important now: study hard and do well in science, including biology, physics and math. These lessons always have to do with medicine.

    Mr Brown got up late this morning. He was going to be late for work.

It was raining hard and the streets were wet. He drove so fast that he didn't see the red light. He couldn't stop his car and hit a car.

    An old man got out of the car and called out angrily, "What are you doing? How can you drive so fast?"

    "I'm sorry, sir, "said Mr Brown. "I didn't see the light turn red." "I will make you drunk(醉的)," he said to himself. Then he brought out a bottle of wine and gave it to the old man. "It's cold today, sir," said Mr Brown." Please drink a little, and then you'll get warm."

    The old man drank some wine and became happy. He asked, "I'm feeling much better now. Why don't you drink any?"

     "I can't drink anything now, sir, "answered Mr Brown." I'm waiting for the policeman. Only drunkards cause accidents, you know! "

    My dad works from Monday to Friday in a bank. He uses the computer to count money. His job is very important in the bank. Dad is also busy at home. At weekends he cooks dinner. Usually he cooks Italian food. On Sundays he makes five pieces of pizza. Sometimes he cooks chicken and makes Chinese food. My mum watches and helps him. I help my dad, too. I wash the dishes.  Many people think it is strange for a man to cook. But my dad enjoys his hobby. Cooking relaxes him. He is a weekend cook.

    I once knew a man who was rich in his love for birds, and in their love for him. He lived in a grove full of all kinds of trees. He had no wife or children in his home. He was an old man with blue and kind eyes, and a voice that the birds loved.

    While he was at work in the grove, the birds came close to pick up the worms(蠕虫) in the fresh earth he dug up. At first, they kept their distance from him, but they soon found he was a kind man, and would not hurt them, but liked to have them near him.

    They knew this by his kind eyes and voice, which tell what is in the heart. So, day by day their faith in his love grew in them.

    All the birds of the grove were soon his fast friends. They were on the watch for him, and would fly down from the green tree tops to greet

him with their chirp(叽叽喳喳叫).

    When he had no work to do, he took bread with him, and dropped the pieces on the ground. Down they would dart(俯冲) on his head and feet to catch them as they fell from his hand.

    He showed me how they loved him. He put a piece of bread in his mouth, with one end of it out of his lips. Down they came like bees at a flower, and flew off with it piece by piece.

    When they thought he slept too long in the morning, they would fly in and _______.

    They went with him to church, and while he sang his hymns in it, they sat in the trees, and sang their praises.

    So the love and trust of birds were a joy to the old man all his life long.
