Maybe you are not familiar with the name Emma Watson, but you are sure to know Hermione Granger, the main character in Harry Potter. It is Watson who played the role of Hermione in all eight Harry Potter films, adapted from the bestselling book series by J. K. Rowling, from 2001 to 2011.

In September 2014, Watson, as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, gave a speech to start the UN Women campaign HeForShe, which fights for women equality.

In January 2016, Watson announced, on Facebook and Twitter, that she would be starting a club for females. Soon after, the book club, “Our Shared Shelf'', whose name was suggested by a fan, was formally set up on a popular book review website Goodreads.

In explaining the reason for starting this book club, Watson wrote on the website, “As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get. There is so much amazing stuff there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought—provoking! I've been discovering so much……. I decided to start a book club, as l want to share what I'm learning and hear your thoughts too. The plan is to choose and read a book every month, and then discuss it during the month's last week.”

Our Shared Shelf has already discussed some famous books including Caitlin Moran's How to Be a Woman, Alice Walker's The Color Purple and Gloria Steinem's My Life on the Road. Watson told the group that she read Mom&Me&Mom. It is one of her favorites, so it will be the November's choice.

Now Our Shared Shelf has around l50, 000 members. Watson says everyone is welcome to join up.

Holmes said, “Somebody sent a letter with five pips (桔核) in it from India, and arrived seven weeks later to kill John's uncle. Then they sent five pips from Scotland and arrived three days later to kill John's father. Now they have sent five pips to John from London!”

“The letters are all from sea ports. The writer was on a ship when he wrote the letters,” I replied.

“Very good, Watson! And John's enemy is in London already!”

“Well, I hope they won't kill young John,” I said.

But they did. The next morning, we read in the newspaper that a policeman found him die near Waterloo station. Holmes was very angry about it.

“He came to me for help and those men murdered him! I'm going to find them, if it's the last thing I do!” he said to me, and he hurried out of the house.

At night, when he came back, he was tired, but pleased, he said, “I know the names of John's enemies! And now I'm going to send them a surprise! This will frighten them!” He took five pips from an orange and put them in an envelope (信封). On it he wrote “S. H. for J. C.

“I'm sending the pips to captain James Calhoun. His ship is called the Star. He and his men are sailing back to Georgia, USA.”

“How did you find him, Holmes?” I asked.

“Ship's papers,” he said, “I've looked at hundreds of them today. Only one ship, the Star, was in the three ports at the right times, this morning the Star left London to sail back to Georgia. I found out that the captain and two of his men, all Americans, weren't on the ship last night, so I'm sure they killed John. When they arrive in America, they'll get the pips and then the police will catch them!”

Pat McGee noticed her daughter hadn't returned to the dentist's waiting room just before her surgery (外科手术). She walked to the bathroom and found Jessica McDaniels, 32, in there, crying.

McGee took her daughter into her arms, "We're going to say 'goodbye' to the old Jessica," she said. "And 'hi' to the new Jessica."

McDaniels, from St. Louis, US, had been wishing for this day since high school, when the bullying (霸凌) about her teeth started. Now that it was finally happening, she was worried and afraid.

It was a social media post two months ago that got her there. Someone posted a photo of McDaniels with a comment about her overbite (龅牙). The post was shared many times, with many people making unkind comments on her appearance.

The bullies didn't know the road McDaniels had traveled. She had nine operations on her ears from age 2 to 12 years old. She was almost deaf in her right ear. Her adult teeth didn't start coming in until she was 11 or 12, and doctors couldn't figure out why they were pushed outward. It got worse as she got older. McDaniels had been trying for years to get her teeth fixed, but it was always too costly.

When her story got out, dentists wanted to help her. One of them, Maryann Udy, got in contact with McDaniels and offered her a new smile - free of charge. McDaniels wasn't sure at first, so she called her mother. The mother told her that Udy was her angel. "You need to do it," she told her daughter.

The surgery was long and complicated (复杂的). It took weeks for the swelling (肿块) to go down, and several more months before McDaniels' new smile was ready. Later that year, she looked at her old photos online and smiled. "I loved her," she said. "She's thankful to be in less pain, to be on the way to a new smile. Sometimes, though, it feels like something is missing from who she was." Still, she loves taking selfies and admiring her new appearance. "I looked good before," she said. "I look even better now."
