I think the most terrible thing in life for my little brother is getting up in the morning. He is almost sick when my mother calls," Herbert! It's seven o'clock! Get up!" Hebert answers," I'm coming!" and goes right back to sleep. I'm not all like my brother. I don't like to go to bed at night but I don't mind getting up in the morning. I usually wake up before my mother calls me. I jump out of bed and go into the bathroom to take a shower. I get dressed, brush my teeth, comb my hair, and get ready to go downstairs for breakfast as soon as my mother calls.

But not for Herbert. He just sleeps. After calling a few more times my mother has to come upstairs and pull Herbert out of bed. It's that way every day with my little brother. Perhaps some day he'll learn to get up on time, but I really don't think so.

A Policeman and a Thief
One day a policeman was taking a thief to the city . On the way , they saw a shop . The thief said . “ Let me go into the shop to buy some bread . We can eat it in the train . ”
The policeman agreed . The thief went into the shop and ran out of the back door . When the policeman knew that , he began to look for the thief everywhere . At last the policeman caught(抓获) thief again . They went on to the city . On the way they came to the same shop . The thief wanted to buy some bread again . “Oh , no . ” said the policeman , “You did that before , and you ran away . This time I^'ll go into the shop and buy bread . You must wait here for me . ”

Mr. Li worked in a post office in Weihai. Last month he retired. His son works in America. Five years ago Mrs. Li went to America to look after their grandson. So Mr. Li decided to see them.
Mr. Li was afraid of taking the plane so he decided to go to America by ship. On the first morning on the ship, Mr. Li met an American. The man said to him, “Good morning!” Mr. Li thought the man told him his name. So he said to him, “Li Haitao.”
On the second morning, Mr. Li met his son's friend on the ship. He told him about the American. After hearing that, his son's friend laughed and said, “He said hello to you in the morning.”
On the third morning when Mr. Li met the American again, he said, “Good morning!” And the American said to him, “Li Haitao, sir.”

Every morning Amma gets up at ten to seven. She brushes her teeth, takes a shower and gets dressed(穿衣服). Then she goes to the kitchen and makes breakfast. She usually has orange juice and bread for breakfast. After breakfast, she reads the newspaper. At seven forty—five she leaves home and goes to work by subway.

Tim is a 16-year-old boy who studies in a high school .His parents tell him to study hard and they do everything for him. They wake him up at 6:00 a.m. and after breakfast his father takes him to school by car. As soon as the young man comes home from school, the supper is ready. Of course, he never does chores(杂物). Once, Tim's father would go to London on business for a year. Before leaving, he told his wife to look after their son well. The woman had to get up earlier and did all what her husband did before. Two months later, she was so tired that she was ill. The young man got into trouble at once. He couldn't do housework. He didn't know where to get on the bus.

Yesterday Tim's mother found his shoes were worn out and told him to buy a new pair. But he didn't know how to choose right shoes. The woman had a sigh(叹息）,gave him a shoe pattern(鞋样)and told him to buy shoes himself. With a policeman's help, he found a shop. The shopkeeper brought some shoes and asked him to choose. When he was trying on pair, suddenly he remembered something and took them off. The man was surprised and asked, “What's the matter?”

“I'm sorry. I've left my shoe pattern at home.”

Charles Dickens was born in one of the small towns in England.

When Dickens was nine years old, his father found a job in London and the family moved there. Later on his father was put in to prison(监狱)for owing(负债). His mother could not supply(供应) enough food to him and his younger brothers and sisters. He had to do something for his family, so he could not go to school.

Only until his father was out of prison, Charles could go to school. At that time he was already twelve. But he did not finish school. Two years later he began to work in a factory.

And at first he was a journalist(记者)and wrote for newspapers. The future writer often went to the library to read books. He read a lot. Then, at the age of twenty-two, Dickens began to write and he wrote a lot of novels and stories all his life.Dickens died over a hundred years ago，but people are still reading his books with great interest.

The Kings lived in a small house in New York with their child. Sometimes Mr. King came back from work very late. When his wife and the child were asleep, he opened the front door of his house with his key and came in very quietly.

But one night when he was coming home late, he lost his key. So when he reached his home, he rang the bell. Nothing happened. He rang it again. Again nothing happened. Nobody moved inside the house. Mr. King knocked at the bedroom window. He spoke to his wife, he shouted, but she didn't wake up. At last he stopped and thought for a minute. Then he began to speak like a small child. "Mother," he said, "I want to go to the toilet." He spoke quietly, but at once, Mrs. King woke up. Then he spoke to her, and she opened the door for him.
