Henry is carried out to sea by a strong wind but {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (spot) by a ship, on which he earns his passage by working without pay. As a result, he is brought to London. Feeling hungry, he {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (wander) alone on the streets, hoping for {#blank#}3{#/blank#} job.

    Then unexpectedly he is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (invite) to a large and beautiful house by two rich brothers, Roderick and Oliver. They give a(n) envelope {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a bank note in it to him.

    They have made a{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(secretly) bet on whether a man can {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (survival) a month in the city with a million-pound bank note. Henry is the person they want.

    He feels surprised at first and doesn't want {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(accept) it, for he just wants an honest job from them, not {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(they) charity. The two brothers persuade him to take it at last, however. Though feeling very {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(surprise) about the matter, Henry promises them not to open the letter until one and a half hours later.

    One day a young man was walking along the road {#blank#}1{#/blank#} he heard a cry. It seemed to be coming from underneath a bridge. As he approached the bridge, the sound got {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (loud) and then he saw {#blank#}3{#/blank#} pitiful sight. There, lying in the muddy riverbed was a little dog about two months old, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} front legs were tightly tied with ropes. It had wounds on its head and {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (cover) with mud.

    The young man wanted to help the dog, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} as he approached, the dog started to bark. The young man did not give up. He sat down and started {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (gentle) talking to the dog. It took a long time but eventually the dog {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (stop) barking and the man was able to touch it. The young man carried the dog home, cared for its wounds, and gave it food and water. Even with all of this, the dog was still {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (friend) every time the young man approached. But the young man did not give up. Weeks went by and the man continued attending to the dog. Then one day, as the young man approached, the dog wagged its tail.

    It was consistent love and kindness {#blank#}10{#/blank#} won a lifelong friendship of loyalty.

    For Nigel Portman, a love of travelling began with what's called a "gap year". In common with many other British teenagers, he chose {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (take) a year out before settling down to study for his degree. After doing various {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (job) to raise some money, he left home to gain some experience of life in different cultures, visiting America and Asia. The more adventurous a young person, the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (great) challenge they are likely to set {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (them) for the gap year, and for some, like Nigel, it can result in a thirst for adventure.

    Now that his university course {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (come) to an end, Nigel is just about to leave on a three—year trip that will take him right around the world. What's more, he plans to make the whole journey {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (use) only means of transport which are powered by natural energy. In other words, he'll be relying {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (main) on bicycles and his own legs; and when there's an ocean to cross, he won't be taking a shortcut (捷径) {#blank#}8{#/blank#} flying aboard—he'll be joining the crew of a sailing ship, instead.

    As well as doing some mountain climbing along {#blank#}9{#/blank#} way, Nigel hopes to pass on to the people he meets the environmental message {#blank#}10{#/blank#} lies behind the whole idea.
