If you're looking for a challenging situation to practice your English, pick up the phone. Not being able to see the other person and the body language can make the chatting difficult. Here are some tips to guide you through an average phone conversation in English.

1).Greetings

Every phone call should begin with a polite greeting such as “Hi, how've you been?” or “Nice to hear from you”. Even if you're calling a business contact for a specific purpose, it'd be rude to jump right into business.

2).Getting to the point

There always comes the point where you want to move on from friendly chatting and get down to business. What should you do in this situation? However, if you are waiting to find out why someone called you, you can guide the conversation by saying “So what can I do for you?”

3).Interrupting without offence

Sometimes you may happen to be speaking with a very talkative person. Keep in mind when you'd like to interrupt, and be sure to do it politely. For example, begin with “I'd like to say something here”.

4).Closing the call

This can be the trickiest part of the conversation! It may be the time to offer good wishes if it's appropriate. Sometimes it's easiest to just say you enjoyed speaking to the other person. Also remember cleverly saying the word well at the beginning of a sentence can indicate you're ready to end the conversation.

A.Use the phrase “I'm just calling to...” to change to the topic at hand.

B.Additionally, you may want to confirm any plans you've made.

C.You should make a little small talk at the beginning.

D.You'd better greet him or her in a friendly way.

E.So it may be difficult to get a word in.

F.Practice English through phone calls.

G.Never fear, though!

The world seems gloomy(阴沉的)and gray when you're feeling blue. In fact, being down might even affect how you perceive(感知)the color blue. A recent study about color was published in the journal Psychological Science. It shows a direct connection between a person's ability to perceive color and their emotions.

Psychologists have long known that emotions can affect the way people perceive things. That's in part because chemicals from your brain might affect how you process what you see. “Color is such an important part of our experience,” says lead author Christopher Thorstenson, a psychologist at the university of Rochester, in New York. There's reason, he says, that sad people commonly describe the world as “colorless” and “gray”, and happy people use words like “bright” and “colorful”.

In the experiment, the researchers randomly assigned people to one of two groups. People in the “sadness” group watched a sad scene from The Lion King. Those in the “amusement' group watched a comedy.

Everyone was then asked to look at red, yellow, green, and blue patches(斑点)that had been changed to a grayish color. “Some of the patches are pretty difficulty to make out,” Thorstenson admits he says it takes some time to figure out their shade. People were scored on how accurate their color perception was. Then they completed an emotional evaluation.

The result? Sad people had a hard time seeing the difference between shades along the blue-yellow color axis(色轴). But they did no have problems seeing colors in the red-green spectrum(光谱). Thorstenson says this could be the result of an evolutionary need to see red as a response to anger.

Thorstenson says these results highlight the possible important of dopamine in sight. Dopamine is a chemical that sends signals to the brain. Researchers are hoping to focus more on dopamine in the future. “We know dopamine affects how we see colors, too,” Thorstenson says “How we feel can really influence how we see the world around us” he says.

Flying for a long time, you finally arrive at the place where you can relax—your hotel room. Now you throw your bag on the bed, turn on the TV and watch an international news programme on a satellite channel probably from UK or the USA.

The main international broadcasters are BBC World and CNN. With an audience of over 1.5 billion people, these are popular channels that offer good-quality news programmes. In both companies, the journalists are experienced writers that produce journalism of a high standard.

However, there are alternative news channels which people watch because they want a less traditional or non-Western view on world events. Russia Today and Al Jazeera International, an Arabic company, are international channels that broadcast in English. Both companies say they give a fresh view on big stories, and their experienced journalists often report from places where Western journalists do not work, and so they give us stories that we don't normally see.

The Internet offers more variety. OneWorldTV is an Internet site where you can find stories about the developing world and human rights, rather than the usual stories about US politics and business. The writers for this company are often local people who write the stories for free. This non-professional journalism is increasing, and it certainly offers more choices.

This increase in citizen journalism means that you can write the news, too. Main news broadcasters often use photographs and stories that members of the general public send to them, especially when there is a dramatic breaking news story. Besides this, some blogs are popular sources of news, and the website NowPublic lets you write stories using information you can get from anywhere, including sites like Youtube, Flickr and Twitter.
