My friend Monty Roberts told me a story about a young boy. One day at school, the boy was asked to write a paper 1 what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

    That night he wrote a seven – paper 2 his dream of owning a farm. He put a great deal of his 3 into the paper and the next day he handed it in to his 4. Two days later he received his paper back. On the5 page was a large red F with a 6 that read, “See me after class.” The boy went to see the teacher after class and asked, “7 did I receive an F?” The teacher said, “This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like 8. Owning a farm requires a lot of money. There's no 9 a young man could ever do it.” Then the teacher added, “10 you rewrite this paper, I will reconsider your 11.”

    The boy went home and 12about it long and hard. Finally, after a week, he turned in the 13 paper, making no changes.

    Monty then said, “I tell you this story because you are sitting in my farm. I 14 have that school paper over fireplace.” He added, “The 15 part of the story is that two summers ago the same schoolteacher 16 30 kids to camp out on my farm. When the teacher was 17, he said, 'Look Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream18.     When my wife and I decided to open our bookstore in 2012, we were a little 1.

    The challenges facing small bookstores were—and remain— 2. Aside from the obvious 3 in online selling, the increase in the popularity of e-books has had a（n）4 effect on independent providers.

    The question is why a new, small-scale（小规模的）provider would 5 enter such a（n）6 market?

    From a personal view, our reasoning was sound: we wanted to 7 our love of great books and reading for pleasure with as many 8 people as possible.

    Having done our homework, one thing became 9. In order for us to succeed, we would have to offer something that none of our larger competitors already provided.

    And so we 10 the Willoughby Book Club. We set up our website in the summer of 2012—and we haven't looked back.

    The idea of 11 is simple. We offer a range of book subscription gift packages, 12 in three-, six- and 12-month options. Our customers 13 a package, tell us a little about the person they're buying it for, and we use this information to 14 the（接收者）a hand-picked, gift-wrapped（包装的）book once a month.

    We also recently decided to 15 one new book to Book Aid International for every gift subscription sold. These books are sent out to sub-Saharan Africa, 16 the educational work there.

    Within four months of starting out, we won the Young Bookseller of the Year award at the 2013 Bookseller awards.

    Our brief 17 from new booksellers to award receivers has been challenging and 18. The biggest thing we've learned is that, despite the 19 facing independent providers, there is a 20 for then in the UK market. It's just a question of finding it.

    I am an American living in France for twenty years. I used to complain about how the French were 1 for friendship. I had a(n)2 time making a living here.

    When I came I felt a need to meet people,3 I went to the cinema night for women's day. I was excited about the way to connect to French women through the 4 we would have after the film, perhaps to make friends and get more chance of 5.

Outside the cinema was a woman with long gray hair who had a slightly 6 smell and was asking for money. I 7 my wallet to give her a Euro and then something made me stop and enter into 8 with her. I said, "Look, people are seeing a film that could 9 your life. I'd rather buy you a ticket than give you money."

    So she came in,10 behind me because she said people 11 the theater didn't like her. She sat next to me in the cinema. Then I noticed some women were looking at me, with expressions of 12.

I encouraged the women to come the following night to an event. I 13 her to an agency that helped women in her 14. Then, a woman came towards me and said, "Did you buy a ticket for the woman?" When I said yes, she said, "Please come to the community center to 15 other employees there."

    This was the 16 of a deep friendship and colleague relationship. The woman I took to the cinema that night wasn't 17. Actually, she was a secretary and spoke English.

    For me, though, she was18 my angel. I made a great friend 19 reaching out to her, also got a great job, and 20 myself of many previous negative judgments about the French.

    A little girl lived in a simple and poor house on a hill. Usually she 1play in the small garden. She could see over the garden fence and across the valley a wonderful house with shining golden windows high on another hill.  2she loved her parents and her family, she desired to live in such a house and 3all day about how wonderful and exciting 4must feel to live there.

    At the age when she gained some 5skill and sensibility (识别力), she 6her mother for a bike ride 7the garden. Her mother finally allowed her to go, 8her keeping close to the house and not 9too far. The day was beautiful. The little girl knew  10where she was heading!  11the hill and across the valley, she rode to the 12of the golden house.

    13she got off her bike and put it against the gate post, she focused on the path 14to the house and then on the house itself. She was very disappointed when she 15that all the windows were 16and rather dirty.

    So 17and heart-broken, she didn't go any further. She 18and all of a sudden she saw an amazing 19. There on the other side of the valley was a little house and its windows were golden. Looking at her little home, she 20that she had been living in her golden house filled with love and care. Everything she dreamed was right there in front of her nose!

    A beautiful September evening, my 11-year-old grandson, Josh, and his team were warming up for their first football game of the season.

    At six, the 1 called the captains forward, said something and 2 his whistle. The two teams 3 separately. I was 4. The other team was, 5, ten inches taller than our players. It didn't take long for their 6 advantage to show. They took a 7-0 lead very 7 . At the half, the score stood at 34 to 6. Josh 8 minimal play time. In the second half, they used Josh more often. The score climbed to 40 to 6.

    Once again, the other team began their 9 down the field. Their quarterback threw the ball. The receiver caught it and 10 the goal. There was only one man in his 11 —Josh. Josh dove and 12 that boy's legs with all his strength. The receiver dragged Josh a couple of yards and 13 fell down.

    On the next play, their quarterback shot through an opening and rushed to the goal, but there was Josh again. Josh took him off his feet and 14 another goal. They scored on the last play. But it wasn't Josh's 15. The game ended with a score of 48 to 6.

On the way home. I wanted to 16 Josh, but he turned to me with a 17 smile. "Grandpa, that was a18 game."

    "But you lost, 48 to 6!"

    "I know, but I did good."

    The boy understood the 19 better than I did. They didn't win, but he did his best. I was proud of him. More 20 , he was proud of himself.
