Gardening is a popular activity all around the world. But what about people who do not have the space to garden? Not to worry! Today, we will give you information about growing beautiful window boxes. 

Location and safety

Window boxes are not just for the outside edge of the window, they can also sit on other places such as, walls, porches, or front steps. This window box can be on the front steps to a home and the owners can entered their window boxes. 

But safety first: People do get killed by falling window boxes. Make sure your window boxes are safe so they will not come down in a storm. If you feel your window box could be unsafe, you can have an indoor window box.

Light and water

Before you choose plants, check your window box location for light and rain. Window boxes dry out faster than in-ground plants, so they need more water. And if a window box is close to a wall or other structure, it may not get enough rainwater. 

Even if all your windows get little sun, do not give up. You can get a great look using plants that love the shade. Many shade-loving plants like spiderworts and verbenas，have leaves in beautiful colors and interesting shapes. 

The "wow" factor

What gives some window boxes their "wow" factor while others are just so-so? Create a theme! This is a central idea for the plants. For example, you may have a window box that is all cactuses or all edible plants. Or you could select only purple violets or green basil, then you'll have a color-themed window box. 

Besides having a theme, upkeep is also important. You should cut off anything dead, water your window boxes often and change things a lot. 

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} It's a kind of promise. Most of the time, we make promises to other people. ("Mom, I promise I'm going to tidy my room when I get back from school.") However, promises you make to yourself are resolutions, and the most common kind is New Year's resolutions. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} When we make resolutions at the beginning of the year, we hope that we are going to improve our lives. Some people write down their resolutions and plans for the coming year. This helps them to remember their resolutions. Others tell their family and friends about their wishes and plans. 

There are different kinds of resolutions. Some are about physical health. For example, some people promise themselves they are going to start an exercise program or eat less fast food. Many resolutions have to do with self-improvement. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Some people might say they are going to take up a hobby like painting or taking photos, or learn to play the guitar. Some resolutions have to do with better planning, like making a weekly plan for schoolwork. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

Although there are differences, most resolutions have one thing in common. People hardly ever keep them! {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Sometimes the resolutions may be too difficult to keep. Sometimes people just forget about them. For this reason, some people say the best resolution is to have no resolutions! How about you — will you make any next year?

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas.  ▲  It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.

The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.

Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.

The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens' feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

Reading a good book is a wonderful journey because the reader can live in someone else's world for a while. Reading together with others, known as buddy (同伴) reading, will make this journey even more fantastic. During the journey, the buddies spend time doing a lot of reading activities. This not only adds to the pleasure of reading, but also deepens their understanding of the books.

Although it is all right to have students join in buddy reading with same-aged schoolmates schools usually pair up older students with younger ones. In 2021, Green School started such a program and has achieved a great success.

Both younger and older readers in this school have learned a lot from this two-year, program. For example, when they listened to each other, they learned to be kind and patient. This experience also provided them with a chance to practice lifelong skills such as exercising leadership or communicating with others. A student called Jason said that reading to a younger buddy was really helpful. He became more confident, as he knew he was a role model for someone.

The school also became a closer community. The reading buddies felt more connected as they often met each other. The students were always excited when they saw their buddies pass by in the hallway.

Now summer vacation is coming. It's a great time to get into books. Why not pair up with a friend, choose a book you both like and read it together?

Many people know LEGO（乐高）. It is from Denmark， and appeared in the 1950s. In about 1960， people began to make LEGO bricks（积木）using a kind of plastic called ABS. 

However， ABS plastic can't be recycled and it takes a very long time to break down（分解）. That's a big problem. 

There is serious plastic pollution around the world. To help save the earth， LEGO began to make new bricks in 2015. These bricks wouldn't pollute the earth so much. Three years later， the factory began making some LEGO parts， like trees， out of a kind of special plastic. The plastic is made from sugar cane（甘蔗）. 

LEGO is now trying to make bricks out of PET plastic. This kind of plastic can be found in things like bottles and clothing. People can make LEGO bricks out of recycled plastic bottles. The factory is working to find out a way to add color to the bricks—right now they're just white. 

Making new friends can be difficult, especially if you are a child in a new neighborhood. It may seem like everyone else has a friend to sit with or to talk to. Don't worry:if you're a nice person, you can make friends,too. 

Step 1. Decide what kind of people you want to play with. Choose (选择) wisely, because you'll probably become like them. Pick children that are nice to other people. 

Step 2. Smile and say something nice to the person you want to be your friend. If you like a person's shoes or think a girl is good at basketball, just say so. Everyone likes compliments. 

Step 3. Join clubs and teams. If you like sports, try out for some. Put yourself in situations where you are around many children that enjoy the same activities as you. It's easier to develop (发展) friendships when you have the same hobbies. 

Step 4. Ask questions whenever it's appropriate(适当的). People love to talk about themselves. Be careful not to ask too personal questions or ask someone too many questions. But asking one or two questions shows you're interested in him or her.
