This was a very busy week. This Friday was Mother's Day, and there were lots of activities at school this week.

▲5/7 Tues.

Johnson, our new music teacher, taught us Mother, a beautiful song about our love for mothers. And Miss Alice told us the story of Mother's Day. The idea of a day for mothers was first given by Miss Anna of Philadephia (费城). As a result of her hard work, the celebration of the first American Mother's Day was held in Philadephia on May 10, 1998. Soon the holiday became popular all over the country and around the world.

▲5/8 Wed.

We practiced activities for Mother's Day today. We prepared some songs and games to show our love to our mothers. This was going to be a special present for our parents on Friday.

▲5/9 Thurs.

It took us two hours to decorate(装饰) our classroom for PAT DAY. I was tired. Mom was also nervous. It would be the first time for her to meet our teachers. She has always been nervous about talking to teachers since she was a child. That's funny!

What do you think of your school? Have you ever expressed your ideas to your teachers or the headmaster? The following are the posts in an online chat room. Students from different schools have written down their thoughts.

Friday 2023/06/17

Johnathon, 14, Grade Eight of Thomas Science and Technology Academy:I'd like to make some suggestions about our school uniform. In the school, we students have to wear uniforms every day. But the dark red and gray sportswear looks dark and old. It can't stand for young and active spirit. We can add some white or orange colors and make a new type of uniform. I hope our headmaster will think about my idea.

Frank, 15, Grade Nine of Mill Hill School:I'd like to say thank you to my headmaster. About half a month ago, my left ankle was badly hurt when I was playing basketball. Our headmaster saw it and came to me. He also took some ice cubes for me and took care of me until my parents came. I just want to thank him for that.

Larry, 15, Grade Nine of Lakeside School:I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more courses like STEM, Drama or Robot programming. It is quite boring to study basic subjects all the time. And second, I hope we can have more teaching equipment for teachers and students. Some students now don't have laptop computers to program their robots and some teachers also need 3D printers to build some special model bridges for Physics teaching.

Mandy, 15, Grade Nine of Brook Avenue High School Today: I want to talk about the possibility of personal classes. Now many high schools are trying the "personal class" system.   Besides some regular classes, students can choose some more lessons they want to take. think it is more effective. And it is also good for us. We don't have to stay in one classroom all the time. We can meet more teachers and students.

"Have you checked the oil in the car?" My father used to say to me. "Hello, hope you are well." Sometimes our phone calls would begin with a question about the oil and end with a question about the oil, with not a lot in between.

Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it's often supplied through the medium (方法) of practical advice. In my experience: It's mostly about my car.

"How's the car running?" "Did you get it serviced?" "How did you get that scrape (刮痕) on the side?"

Why can't fathers just say "I love you" or "It's great to see you"? The point is: That's exactly what we are saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish.

The words "You made my life better from the moment you were born" may be hardly heard, but the key is there in the more common "I'll hold the ladder while you get the leaves out of the gutter (排水沟)."

When I was 17, I went on my first road trip—a friend and I in that old car. My father stood on the corner early on a cold morning to say goodbye to us.

"Highways are dangerous," he said, "so don't try to catch up with anything faster than a horse. And take a break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil."

At the time we thought his speech was pretty funny and would chant "car and horse, car and horse" every time I drove faster and passed other speeding cars.

Dad's long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English dictionary, I'd have understood that the speech my friend and I so casually mocked (嘲笑) was simply Dad's attempt at affection.
