Here is a story told an American general（将军）who was a very important figure in the American army during the First World War. Everybody in the United States knew him and many people wished to have a picture or something of his in their homes.

    Soon after the war, the general returned to Washington. One day he went to a dentist（牙医）and had six teeth pulled out. A week later the general heard that his teeth were being sold in curiosity shops at $5 each. On catch of the teeth there was a label（标签）with the name of the general and words, "Buy these teeth and show them to your friends at home. "The general got angry. He rushed to his office and ordered six officers to go around the city and buy all his teeth.

    The officers went out and visited every curiosity shop in the capital. They were away from the office all day. In the evening they returned and put on the table in front of the general the teeth they had bought. They had collected 175 teeth.

    Cross-country skier Man Dandan won the women's 1.4km individual sprint here on Monday, earning China's first gold at the eighth Asian Winter Games.

    "I was in good form today, "said the 28-year-old girl after winning the title in the final round with3 minutes and 48.29 seconds." I didn't think much, but just focused on the games. As an old member, I want to set a good example for my younger teammates by doing my best no matter what the result is."

    Mikko Olavi Virtanen, head coach of the Chinese cross-country skiing team, said after the game he is satisfied with Man Dandan's performance." She is a super talented sprint skier. Her biggest problem before was to maintain the speed for four rounds of the competition. We have been working on that for the past seven months. I have been giving her advice, such as how to save the energy till the final round," he said, adding that Man is a good learner.

    He also said that the Chinese cross-country skiing team has huge potential. "We have a quite young team. We still have five more years to Beijing Winter Olympics. I hope we can continue this good work for a long term," he said. Yelena Kolomina from Kazakhstan took the silver and Ju Hye Ri from South Korea got the bronze. Australia's Casey Wright finished the third in the final round but did not get a medal as a guest athlete.

    A young boy was playing with a ball in the street. He threw(扔) it too hard and it broke the window of a house and fell(掉) inside. A woman came to the window and shouted(大喊) at the boy. The boy was afraid and ran away. But he still wanted his ball back. A few minutes later, the boy came back and knocked(敲) at the door and said, "My father is going to come and repair(修理) your window soon."

    After a while, a man came to the door with tools(工具) in his hand, so the woman let the boy take his ball away. When the man finish repairing the window, he said to the woman, "Please pay ten dollars."

    "But aren't you the father of the boy?" the woman asked, looking surprised (惊奇).

    "No," he answered, looking more surprised, "Aren't you his mother?"

Two men were travelling together through the forest on a lonely path. Before the travelling, they said they would help each other when there was danger. They had not gone far when a bear rushed towards them from some bushes.

One man was a good climber, and quickly climbed up a nearby tree. The other man tried to climb the tree but failed. Looking at his friend in the tree, he shouted loudly for help. The man in the tree was afraid that his friend under the tree would pull him down, so he didn't give his friend a hand.

The man under the tree, seeing that he had no chance alone against the bear, fell to the ground and pretended to be dead. The bear came nearer and nearer. It made his blood run cold.

The bear came to him, lowered its great head, smelled him all over and touched him with its nose. The bear thought the man was dead, so it went off into the forest again without hurting him. After the bear left, the other man came down from the tree, and smilingly asked his friend what the bear had said to him. "For I could see," he said, "that he put his mouth close to your ear."

"He told me to tell you," replied the other, "that you were a great coward(懦夫), and that it is dangerous to travel with a friend who leaves you behind when there is danger."

To 12-year-old Joe Whale, mistakes are not problems. They are good 1 to have fun making art. And making art is what Joe has been doing since he was a kid. He was very 2 in drawing and spent a lot of time practicing his painting skills. "I would draw and 3 art pieces at every chance," he said. He made his specialty（特长） , black-and-white doodles（涂鸦） , at the age of six.

At school, Joe would finish his work 4 and then he could doodle. He 5 drew many funny pictures everywhere, on his math workbook, on his table and on the paper. 6 his doodles gave people a bright feeling, his teachers were not always 7 to find his doodles in unexpected places!

Joe doesn't always make plans for his art ahead. He just draws 13 what he meets or what he thinks in his daily life. If he meets 14 , he just looks around. "For example, when I'm hungry, I draw food", he said. Joe also gives a useful 15 to other creative kids: Find what you truly love and don't let anything stop you.
