山西省阳泉市2020届高三下学期英语第二次质量调研试卷
The habit of reading is one of the greatest resources of mankind, and we enjoy reading books that belong to us much more than the ones that are borrowed.
A borrowed book is like a guest in the house and should be treated with care and considerate formality. You must see that it keeps no dirty or destroyed pages. You cannot mark it and you cannot use it as you like. If it is a distinguished guest, it really makes you feel empty when he or she leaves.
However, your own books belong to you. Books are for use, not for show. You should own no book that you are afraid to mark up, or afraid to place on the table, wide open and face down. Private ownership also encourages meaningful marking.
This practice enables you to remember more easily the significant sayings, and to refer to them quickly and then review them more frequently in the future.
One should have one's own bookshelves, which should not have doors, glass windows or keys. What's more, the best wallpaper is books, which are more varied in color and appearance than any other wallpaper. They are more attractive in design and if you sit alone in the room, you are surrounded with close friends.
How could it be? Books are of the people, by the people and for the people. They are part of history and the best part of personality. Book-friends have this advantage over living friends. The living friends are usually almost unreachable and we also can't always see our personal friends. But in a private library, you can at any moment talk with Shakespeare or Dumas or Dickens. Instead of seeing them masked, your look into their innermost heart of heart.
A. Books are the ladder of human progress.
B. Marking instructive passages in books is a good habit.
C. And then, you really ought to return a borrowed book someday.

G. You can do your ultimate best to entertain yourself as an audience or an actor.
As we all know, friendship is of great importance in our daily life. A friend can give us help and share our difficulties and happiness. But how to make friends is still difficult to some of us. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
1). Be friendly to others. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You should try to make a stranger feel at home wherever he happens to be. Think more of others than of yourself and never judge a person by his appearance and clothes.
2). Be reliable. If you and your friend agree to meet somewhere, don't be late. If you're not going to make it on time or make it at all, call them as soon as you realize it. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Be someone that people know they can depend on.
3). {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Listen carefully to what people say, remember important details about them (their names, their likes and dislikes), ask questions about their interests, and just take the time to learn more about them.
4). Encourage your friends: A true friend always gives courage to his friends. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Never make fun of or laugh at your friends in front of others. You should come to support them.

Whether you use a GPS device (设备) in your car or Google Maps on your smartphone, few of us travel anymore without digital help. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} For one thing, GPS isn't as accurate as you might think. What's more, science is beginning to discover that people who rely only on navigational technologies may have a poor sense of place during travel.
{#blank#}2{#/blank#} They soon become outdated as cities change, requiring users to continually purchase updated versions. They're also easily damaged from exposure to water, poor weather conditions and other physical forces.
However, paper maps still offer a few advantages that technologies can't. For example, studying a map allows you to get a full view of where you're going, including the roads, forests, towns, historic sites, rivers and mountains you'll come across along the way. Many older maps are wonderful, offering a lovely feast for the eyes. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}
Research by Toru Ishikawa and colleagues at the University of Tokyo found that GPS users spent 30% more time looking at their device than those who used a paper map. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Instead they tended to stare at their screens and follow directions, never gaining a full view of where they were going.
Therefore, go ahead and use your GPS, but also carry a paper map as a handy backup. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Also it could even be a life-saver!
