What makes a good school?

    I'm a parent of two elementary students. The experience that my children are going through now in the elementary school is so different from mine when I was at their age. What I think of a good school is communication between teachers students and parents. Parent-teacher communication guarantees that a child is educated in the same way and in turn a child will build special bonds in communication between their teachers and parents.

    My children return home telling me that their teachers ignore their questions when they raise their hands and don't talk much. On the other hand, I feel the same when I write notes to school. This is telling me there is a lack in communication from the school teachers nowadays as their life is so overwhelmed by the over-crowded schools we have in the US.

    However choosing a career in education is not just for a good job. A teacher should really have heart in touching every child's life. Even now, I still remember all my elementary school teachers' names. The answer lies in the fact that they spent every minute of their precious time helping me and answering all my questions with patience. When you have teachers who are willing to spend time for any child and communicate with parents, it is what I consider a GREAT school for a child to attend, not just GOOD.

A. I don't get any response from the teachers to my questions, not even a one-word response.

B. There are different ways of communication, according to different cultures.

C. Why is that?

D. Strong communication is very important to a child's education.

E. I feel that schools nowadays don't communicate with parents enough and neither is involvement.

F. My elementary school teachers all touched my life.

G. What do you think of it?

举一反三
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。

 A. Make sure you match the job description

 B. Be conscious of good interview manners

 C. Put your interviewer at ease

 D. Plan before you pursue

 E. Dress to make a good first impression

 F. Do be sincere

    Attending an interview with the intent to impress the hiring manager is dangerous if you go about it in the wrong way. Below are some things you can do to maximize your chances of getting the job.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    True, sometimes interviewers aren't prepared themselves, but that doesn't mean they'll forgive you for the same mistake. Developing and following a plan at the beginning of a job search has a significant impact on its success. Research the job thoroughly. Think about how your previous experience qualifies you and how it compares to the work on offer. Set "process goals" to keep you on track toward your larger career goals. "Process goals" aren't big-picture objectives. They're "roll up your sleeves and make it happen" objectives.

 {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

You can't think of any personal weaknesses, you've overcome all your weaknesses, or you say you haven't given it a lot of thought. Mistakes? Not you. No one progresses in a career without making mistakes and learning from them. Trained interviewers will be looking to see if you readily acknowledge and admit your weaknesses and can describe mistakes you've made and what you learned from them. Never give a measured response that sugarcoats reality to a tough interview question about your past.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    If you were a 6-foot, 5-inch, 250-pound Frenchman with strong arms and a bushy beard, would you apply for the part of Little Orphan Annie on Broadway? How ridiculous that image is. If you don't have an accurate understanding of what the job is all about, your opinion of how well-matched you are will be based on an inaccurate foundation. For example, sales professionals are expected to possess excellent communication skills, time management and organization skills. Make sure you have a full job description from the employer so you can match your skills to the job's requirements.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    The best way to ensure a good first impression is to dress smart. What is appropriate depends on the particular employer and job but, generally speaking, it is better to dress formally while remaining comfortable. If you are unsure what to wear, you should always go with the most conservative, professional option. What you are wearing tells employers a lot about how serious you are about getting the job. The more confident and polished you appear, the more likely you are to leave the interviewer with a positive impression of you.

 {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Learn as much as you can about how the interview will be conducted. Employers are looking for the candidate with the best knowledge and experience, but rarely do they hire for work skills at the expense of social skills. If you lack self-awareness, it shows. And it doesn't look good. Be on time for your interview. Be aware of your body language. Even in the critical small talk before the interview, make eye contact with your interviewer to convey confidence when you're speaking, smile when it's appropriate, and look alert.

任务型阅读

    Like many people, the start of the day maybe isn't your favourite time. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Try at least one of these tomorrow.

    Stretch(伸展)every part of your body for 15 minutes.

    Try this before you open your eyes. Lift your arm and begin by stretching each finger, then your hand, then your wrist, then your arm. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Then your toes, feet, ankles and legs. In this way, you upped the flow of blood through your body, providing more oxygen to all parts of your body.

    Set your alarm 10 minutes earlier.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} You can begin your day by lying in bed, slowly waking up, mentally ticking off the decisions you made in advance about what you're going to wear, what you are going to do.

    Brush your tongue for 2-3 minutes.

    There's no better way to rid you of bad morning breath and begin your day fresh and clean. After all, more than 300 types of bacteria stay in your mouth every night. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Avoid any decisions.

    For truly relaxing mornings, reduce the number of choices and decisions you make to zero. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Really, there's no need to vary your breakfast, timetable or clothes to wear every morning.

A. Repeat with the other arm.

B. You can change your living habits.

C. Make your decisions the night before.

D. These few minutes in bed are all yours.

E. Quick brush can't make them all disappear.

F. Here are some healthy habits you can learn without much efforts.

G. In this way, you don't have to jump out of bed and rush through your morning.

Pronunciation Tips

    These English pronunciation tips will help you get the most out of your Pronunciation Power program.

    {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    For example, "threw" and "through", although spelled differently, are pronounced the same. Also, identical(相同的) letters or letter clusters(字母组合) in words do not always produce the same sound. For example, the "ough" in "though" and "through" represents a different sound in each word. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Imagine a sound in your mind before you say it.

    Try to visualize(想象))the positioning of your mouth and face. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Listen to and try to imitate the Pronunciation Power instructor.

In addition to listening for specific sounds, pay attention to pauses, the intonation(语调) of the instructor's voice and patterns of emphasis. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    The English language has many different dialects, and words can be pronounced differently.

    It is important, however, that you pronounce words clearly to ensure effective communication.

    Finally, the Pronunciation Power program is a tool to help you.

    But you must practice what you are learning! Remember that you are teaching your mouth a new way to move. You are building muscles that you do not use in your own language. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Use the program to exercise your mouth a little bit each day.

A. Read these words over and over again and try to learn them by heart.

B. This can be just as important as the pronunciation of sounds.

C. Learn to practice what you hear, not what you see.

D. So you should force yourself to do what you really don't like to do.

E. Do not confuse pronunciation of words with their spelling!

F. It is like going to the gym and exercising your body.

G. Think about how you are going to make the sound.

    Psychology says that many are unwilling to take risks. It's human nature to be nervous about putting ourselves on the line, whether physically or emotionally. But it's good for us to do that once in a while, especially when the risk is to achieve a desired result. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Our human nature should be to take risks, but some just sit and wish they would not have the fear to move on because of one or two failures in their lives. Please step out and don't let the past hold you back from living life to the fullest. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    In studying the psychology of taking risks, we find that human nature provides us with the desire to experiment and take chances. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} This risk-taking attitude has become a part of our modern culture. Roller Coasters and bungee jumping are two common risk-taking activities that even the average person seems to enjoy despite the logical understanding that danger is not fun. This psychological connection creates an interesting connection between what is safe and what human enjoys.

    Without taking risks, nothing good can happen. Getting in a car each day is a risk. Getting out of bed is a risk.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} We need to take risks so that we can accomplish things. Astronauts take risks when they get inside of a rocket; however, the things they achieve are literally astronomical. Investors take a risk when they buy parts of a company. However, without doing that, they couldn't receive money on their investment.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} It is impossible to move forward in life, earn money, enjoy a relationship, play a sport, or do anything else without taking a risk. That is all part of the game. It's not one of the most important parts of life.

A. Move forward and move on.

B. There is no such thing as a perfect safety.

C. In that way, we become stronger and braver.

D. Thus, we will achieve more success in daily life.

E. We need to take risks so that we can gain something.

F. You must spend more time thinking about the strategies of risk.

G. Risk-taking is a benefit that allowed ancient people to discover new places.

    Two weeks before the examinations start, you should make a revision timetable. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Closer to the exam week, you should revise one subject for one hour each evening.

    During the examination week you will probably have some time available to revise. Makea special revision timetable for this period. This time is not an extra holiday or a chance for you to stay in bed!

    Never try to revise one subject for too long at a time. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    When you learn anything by heart, you must make sure that you understand it. Always go back after three days and make sure that you still know it. If you have forgotten it, it means that it only centered your short-term memory. Learn it again and go back to it after a couple of days. Once you can repeat it accurately after three days, the information has entered your long-term memory. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    It is useful to make revision notes from your textbook or file but you must not assume that making these notes means that you know them. Learning them takes much more time and effort and you must always check your memory after a few days.

    Some definitions(定义), such as those you are given in mathematics, must be remembered accurately. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Repeat it over and over to yourself when you get the chance. Check that you still know it after a few days.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Revision is not something that can be achieved by just reading a chapter in a book and vaguely(模糊地)remembering a few sentences immediately afterwards. This is true for class tests as well as for examinations.

A. Write the definition out three times.

B. Make sure that you can do well in your exams.

C. One and a half hours per subject are long enough.

D. Keep checking every couple of days to make sure that it has.

E. Try to revise one subject for at least half an hour each evening.

F. You should turn to others for help if you meet with difficulties.

G. To revise or to learn your lessons you need to spend time and effort.

As the world struggles to deal with the climate crisis, some companies are working to remove polluting carbon dioxide from the air. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} But two US companies have recently made important progress.

Scientists say large amounts of CO2 must be removed from the CO2 atmosphere and stored. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} But there's so much CO2 in the atmosphere that just planting trees and protecting forests won't solve the problem. And, when plants and trees die, the carbon they've stored gets released again.

That means humans need to come up with ways of removing carbon from the air and storing it. This is called Direct Air Capture (DAC). The science of removing carbon from the air is challenging, and it's still pretty new. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}So one puzzle for these companies is how to remove carbon without creating more pollution.

A company called Heirloom has just opened the first DAC plant in the United States. The company heats up the limestone to separate out the CO2, which is concrete. The process is extremely expensive. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}That's a tiny amount compared to how much carbon needs to be removed from the atmosphere, but the company says it hopes to remove a billion tons per year by 2035.

 {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Some people worry that it will take too long for DAC technology to become powerful enough to make a difference. Others worry that focusing on removing carbon could take attention away from more important climate actions, like switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy. But experts say the decision isn't to do one or the other. The world needs to end fossil fuel use and pull carbon out of the air.

A. Plants and trees do this naturally.
B. That's a huge and challenging goal.
C. Not everyone is excited about carbon removal.
D. Graphyte is another US company working on DAC.
E. The new plant can remove 1,000 tons of CO2 a year.
F. Most DAC processes require a large amount of energy.
G. As a matter of fact, CO2 is just a small part of the gases that make up air.
