Recently I understood the true meaning of love. The 1 was Kane, my neighbor Joline's two-year-old son.

Kane was born with a physical problem on his 2. And I witnessed (目睹) the 3 that Kane's physical shortcomings had on his family. I also saw a 4 family that embraced (拥抱) this special child. A family that wouldn't allow Kane to know he was 5. Joline had constructed a small cart for his son to6 . Kane used his hands to move about, and the cart 7 him to "go to" any place just as everyone else was able to do. Kane was not just a member of the family, but the 8 of the family.

    With a wide smile, it was easy to see that even at the age of two, Kane liked to 9 with people very much. With wisdom of an individual (个人), this boy even 10 the most complex of human emotions. Later I came to  11 that this child was sent to help some of us who weren't just getting what love was all about.

    Kane demanded attention, 12  not because of his mobility (移动能力) challenges or other apparent shortcomings. In his mind, he had no13 or shortcomings. The 14  was that he received attention because he was alive and real and had so much to offer.

    Kane 15  me in a deep way. His ability to refuse to be different has 16 me. Kane was and is 17 a boy of powerful energy to me. From him and his family I learnt the 18 : love surpasses (超越) all things. I can only imagine that as the parent of a child like Kane one might be filled with19  . But I believe that having a child like Kane is actually a(n)20  . The parents of such special babies are angels too,just as the babies are.

    A twenty-three-year Dutch student has enjoyed a short but unexpected holiday in Dubai. Mr Frank Vreede, a business student, had taken a part-time job at Schiphol Airport to help pay for his 1 ,He worked as a baggage handler.

    Last Friday night after a 2 day in the university library preparing for his final exams, Frank was  3  a plane at the airport. He was waiting for the next baggage truck to arrive and he felt tired. He decided to have a 4 rest ,so he sat down in the hold of the plane and shut his eyes-just for a moment.

     5 , while he was sleeping, the plane took off. An hour later, Frank  6  and was shocked to discover that the plane was in the air.  7  was a terrible noise from the engines, and he tried not to  8  It was dark, uncomfortable and very, very cold. Frank knew he could not  9 in the freezing temperatures. It was an impossible situation.

    He decided to make as much 10 as possible. He hit the ceiling of the baggage hold and shouted at the top of his voice.  11  a passenger heard the noise and called a flight attendant, who immediately informed the pilot.  12 the captain understood what was happening, he ordered hot air to be pumped into the hold.

    When the plane arrived at Dubai International Airport, an ambulance was waiting to take a very  13  and frightened Mr Vreede to hospital.  14  examined him, but he was unhurt and was allowed to leave after a few hours  15 spread quickly about this "stowaway". The managing Director of one of Dubai's top hotels offered him a free room for the weekend. " He must have wanted to come to Dubai very much if he was prepared to travel in the hold ! " 16  the MD.

    " 17 been so kind," said Mr Vreede. "I'm really enjoying my stay in Dubai and I'm getting a lot of rest, so I won't fall asleep on the job again. " He also  18  to his boss for sleeping at work  19  working, and promised it would not happen again. "Next time, I'II catch a  20 flight! " said Mr Vreede.

    It's amazing how one dollar can change the culture of a school.

    We have a small school. There are 1 about 30 middle school students. It can get really 2 and stressful as most of the kids get good grades and 3 to be the best they can be. It's good except that a lot of us middle school kids felt pressured.

    My friend and I, 4, set out to find a way to change the 5 . We believed doing things for others was the only way to get ourselves over our 6 about school .

    On the first day of school we 7 put a dollar folded into a heart into one of the senior's lockers with a note saying, “ Buy yourself a snack, and share 8.” We hoped to do that every day. Little did we know the 9 it would make.

    People went 10 over it and everyone was talking about 11 it might be doing the acts of love and 12 that maybe they should do something too. Nobody knew it was us but it is so much fun to see the 13 on everyone's face now ! Lots of other people have started to 14now too: chocolate bars, cookies, people 15 their lunches with other kids.

    Around twenty years ago I was living in Seattle and going through hard times. I could not find 1work although I had a lot of experience and a Master's degree.

    To my 2, I had to drive a school bus to 3my family. At the same time, I had some 4with different companies but they all5to say I did not get the job. I went to the bus barn（车库）, feeling6.

    Later that afternoon, 7doing my rounds through the town I had an inner wave rise from deep 8 me and I thought "Why has my9become so hard?"

    Immediately after this internal（内心的）scream, I 10the bus over to drop off a little girl. As she11, she handed me an earring saying I should keep it12somebody looked for it. The13was stamped with words "BE HAPPY". Then it struck me. I had been putting all of my14into what was wrong with my life rather than what was15!

    One night there was a phone call for me from the16at a large hospital. She asked me whether I17do a one-day training for 200 hospital workers. I said 18and got the job.

    My day with the hospital workers19very well. I got a great20and many more days of work. To this day I know that it was because I changed my attitude to life.

I was working as a lifeguard at Tower 15 on Newport and two blocks to my right was another guard named Mike, working at Tower 17. He called me over the phone and said, “Hey, I have 1 two kids who are swimming in the dangerous zone. I have to give them a warning. Keep an eye on us.” I said “Sure.” In case of 2, anytime we got out of our tower, we were supposed to 3 somebody else.

Mike hung up the phone and 4 the lifebuoy(救生圈). Then he realized that these two kids had been 5and that there was a great tendency for them to be 6 by the wave. 7, Mike rushed toward the ocean. I 8 the water and all I found was two small heads. The mother of the two kids knelt(跪) down on the beach with 9 .

    When I dropped my binoculars(望远镜) and reached the mother, Mike was in waist-deep water, 10 the two kids. I turned to the mum and said, “Hey, it's OK. They are safe.” I saw the terror started to 11. Then she glanced back and got her first good look at Mike. A new kind of 12 washed over her face as though there was another threat to her kids' lives. She snatch(抢) her kids without 13 .

    Mike had some seemingly 14behavior, and his shaved head showed a scar(伤疤). Maybe he had no 15 manners, but his lifesaving ability 16 his unsatisfactory skills in PR(public relation). In the mother's 17 , Mike was a really terrible guy. However, that couldn't change the fact that he had just18her kids.

    Mike just glanced at me and smiled. As I jogged back to my tower, I promised myself I'd never let my own 19 prevent me from 20 a hero when I meet one.

    Tim Becker and his neighbors are doing something to make their neighborhood a trouble-free area.

    When Tim Becker gets in his car to go shopping, he doesn't 1 drive to a store and back home. He always looks 2 up and down the streets of his neighborhood. He looks for anything 3 such as strange cars, loud noises, 4 windows, or people gathering on street corners.

    Tim 5 to a neighborhood watch group in Stoneville, Indiana. USA. The neighborhood watch group 6 on the third Wednesday of every month. That's 7 Tim gets together with about ten of his neighbors to discuss community 8. Members of the neighborhood watch group want to help the police 9 their homes, streets, and families safe.

    Tina Stedman, president of 10 neighborhood watch group, agrees with Tim.

    "People seem to think that crime (犯罪) happens to other people but not 11 them. Well, it's never happened to me," she said, "but I don't think anyone has the 12 to steal from other people or to make them feel 13 sitting in their own homes."

    Alex, a member of the group, said that all the neighbors 14 out for one another. "We 15 each other's homes. We keep watch on the neighborhood at night and on weekends. Usually a 16 of four or five of us goes out together. If something doesn't look right, then we call the 17. For example, if we notice a group of teenagers who seem to be looking for 18, or someone destroying property (财产), we report to the police."
