One January morning, the captain got up early and walked down to the beach. It was a cold winter's day with the sun still low in the sky. My mother was upstairs with my father, who was now very ill. That year the winter was long and hard, and we knew my father would not see another spring.

I was getting the table ready for the captain's breakfast. Suddenly, the door of the inn (客栈) opened and a man stepped inside. I had never seen him before. He wore a short sword (剑) by his side and I found he had only three fingers on his left hand.

I asked him what he wanted and he said: “I'll take a glass of rum (朗姆酒)”But before I could get it, he told me to come near him. "Is this table for my old friend Bill? " the stranger asked, with a terrible smile.

I told him I did not know his friend Bill and the break fast was for a man who was staying at the inn. "We call him the captain."

“Does he have a sword cut on his face.”

    "Yes" I said

“That's Bill,” said the stranger. “Is he here?”

I told him the captain was out walking, and the man waited, like a cat waiting for a mouse. I did not like the look on his face and was sure the captain would not be pleased to see him.

When the captain came back, the man pulled me behind the door. The captain opened the door and walked across the room.

     “Bill” said the stranger.

The captain turned quickly and saw us. The color went from his face and he looked old and sick. "Black Dog! " he said. He looked at the stranger. “And what do you want?”

"I'll have a glass of rum, "said Black Dog, "then you and I'll sit and talk like old friends.”

I got the rum and they told me to go away. I went out of the room, but the voices became louder.

Mother Tongue (语言)

My name is Jiniku but everyone calls me Joey, including my parents. My father is American but my mother is not. My mother grew up in a country whose name I cannot pronounce correctly. She was educated in French and Latin, Spanish and German.

My mother wrote all day, but never showed anyone what she wrote. She had notebooks she would write in, and a typewriter to straighten out (整理) the final copy.

When she had typed (打字) pages, she put them in a box. This box was deep under the bed that she and my father shared.

There were only two words that she ever said in the real voice, with her real accent (口音), real tongue. I heard her say them only three times in her life. She taught them to me one night as I lay on her legs, sweating (出汗) with fever.

"Jiniku," she said in a low voice. "Jiniku." I focused (集 中) on her voice through my fever, realizing that something had changed. She was speaking from a part of her that she had not opened for a long time. She took my hand, and placed my palm (掌心) over her heart. "Juriszu." She stared out the window. There was a long silence. I could feel her heartbeat, which was calmer and slower than my own. "My name," she said at last, speaking once more in English, "means „dark ocean (海洋).‟ And you, Jiniku, my baby, yours means „life.‟" She looked out the window again. "„Ji‟ is the word for a happy birth. One where everyone lives and there is little pain. „Ni‟ is a tree that had its roots (根) spread far and whose branches (树枝) shelter (庇护) all. „Ku‟ is spirit. You have this all-encompassing (包罗万象的) life." She placed her hand on my heart. "The first and last letters of our names are the same," she said. "Don‟t forget that, Jiniku."

 信息摘录。

Paris is the capital of France. Its subway is very special(特别的). You can enjoy its culture(文化)when you are in this city.

Look, you can see many people listening to music with their headsets(耳机)on the subway. When they are on the subway or at the station, there is always a book in the hand, too.

The subway station in Paris is not big. However, each of them has its special things. Some stations look like ships. Some have clothes, hats and shoes. And every station has a big ad picture. But many of them are for selling clothes and cosmetics(化妆品).

You can meet some beggars(乞丐)on the subway. But the beggar s on the Paris subway are also very special. They enjoy playing the violin or guitar. After playing, it is natural(自然的)for them to go around the train and ask you for some money. They think they should get the money because of their show.

If you want to learn more about Paris, go to the subway and enjoy its culture by yourself.
