Mike found a job in a bookstore after he finished middle school. He wouldn't do anything but wanted to get rich.   It was a cold morning. It snowed and there was thin ice on the streets. Few people went to buy books and the young man had nothing to do. He hated to read, so he watched the traffic. Suddenly he saw a bag fall off a truck and it landed by the other side of the street.

“It is full of expensive things.” Mike said to himself. “I have to get it right now, or others will take it away.”He went out of the bookstore and ran across the street. A driver saw him and began to whistle (鸣笛), but he didn't hear it and went on running. The man drove to the side, hit a big tree and hurt himself in the accident. Two weeks later, Mike was taken to the court (法庭). A judge asked if he heard the whistle when he was running across the street. He said that something was wrong with his ears and he could hear nothing.“But you heard me this time,” said the judge.“Oh, I'm sorry. Now I can hear with one ear.”“Cover (盖住) the ear with your hand and listen to me with your deaf (聋的) one. Well, can you hear me?”“No, I can't , sir.”“You told a lie.     Growing up in Philadelphia, Lieberman started cooking with his stay-at-home dad when he was seven. His food-loving family had two kitchens, and he quickly learned what was the best way to bake his cakes. Lieberman improved his kitchen skills greatly during a year abroad before college, learning from a cook in Italy and studying local specialties in Germany, Spain and France. At Yale, he was known for throwing dinner parties, single-handedly frying and baking while mixing drinks for dozens of friends. Just for fun, he and some friends decided to tape a show named Campus Cuisine about his cooking. Lieberman was a real college student showing his classmates how to do things like making drinks out of dining-hall fruit. That helped the show become very popular among the students. They would stop Lieberman after classes to ask for his advice on cooking. Tapes of the show were passed around, with which his name went beyond the school and finally to the Food Network.
Food Network producer Flay hopes the young cook will find a place on the network television. He says Lieberman's charisma is key. “Food TV isn't about food any more,” says Flay. “It's about your personality and finding a way to keep people's eyeballs on your show.”
But Lieberman isn't putting all his eggs in one basket. After taping the first season of the new show, Lieberman was back in his own small kitchen preparing sandwiches. An airline company was looking for someone to come up with a tasteful, inexpensive and easy-to-make menu to serve on its flights, and Lieberman got the job.

Andrew Hollennan, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home. The land was wet and forested, and made a home for birds, other animals and many different plants. It made the perfect place for him to study and get to know the nature. He had seen some red- tail hawks, red foxes, wood turtles and other animals. He also found special native flowers.

Suddenly it was announced that the "empty" land would be improved by a lot of houses on it.

The plants would be removed, the animals would run away and most would probably die. Then the wet soil would be covered with extra grounds. When he heard about the news, he was not happy. He was very worried that the land and water would be polluted.

Andrew wrote down clearly all the researches he had down about the area, and how the houses would affect the local environment. He sent letters to members of local government and television reporters. He also called on his neighbors to oppose the building of the houses. Although he was only 12 years old, he had the courage and wisdom of a person much older. Andrew's teachers described him as gentle, shy and active. His classmates also admired how much he knew about local animals and plants, and the environment. Each day after school, Andrew went door-to-door, to ask the people to sign, who did not want the houses to be built. In only one month, he got the signatures of 250 people.

In the end, the land remained a safe place for birds, animals and plants that belonged there.

Andrew won many prizes for his brave and great work to stop the houses being built, and thus help save the environment.

Hi, I'm Nancy. On September 9, 2010, I was told that I had a new baby sister. I had a selfish thought at that moment—Mom and Dad are going to be with the baby all the time and buy her all kinds of toys. I will get half as much love from them as before.

A few days later doctors told my parents that my sister had hearing problems.

We made several trips to a famous hearing center, but the treatments didn't work, so my family began learning sign language. Actually, here my family only refer to my parents and sister, not me. My parents spent hours with my sister teaching her and themselves by playing sign language games. But I didn't want to learn with them. I did my own things every day.

Years passed. The summer before the ninth grade, as my parents had to work, it was up to me to take care of my sister. This meant sending her to summer school in the morning, playing with her after finishing our homework and cooking delicious food for her.

One day my mother asked me to sign something, and I failed. My mom was sad about it. This hit me hard and I came to realize how selfish I was. I needed to talk to my sister. But I couldn't even sign the easiest sentences like "Where are you going?" or "What do you want to eat?"

It was at that time that I started to go to sign language classes with my family. We sat down watching sign language movies and playing sign language games.

Today I can communicate well with my sister. It brings a smile to my face when my sister signs something to me about my friends, and they can't understand. I realized it was no fun not knowing what my family was saying.

So, if you have a family member with special needs, don't leave her or him alone. This person should be the first thing on your mind. For me, signing now comes before school, friends and sports, because it is the language of my family!
