“Please take my penny,” said Maggie to old Dan, the fisherman, who sat on a bench repairing his nets.

Her brother Andrew drew her back, whispering, “Maggie, he is not a beggar (乞丐)!”

But Maggie paid no attention. “Please take it,” she said again. Old Dan smiled, and took it. “Thank you, little miss,” he said, “It is kindly meant.”

After that, Maggie went to the beach to gather shells. She never thought how fast the hours were passing until being tired. She sat down on a rock. Soon she was scared because the sea water was going up. She wanted to go home, but she found the places she had gone down easily very difficult to climb up. The stones were wet and smooth. What could poor Maggie do? She felt sad and cried.

Luckily, Dan's large dog Rover jumped down from a rock! Rover raised his loud bark. The fisherman had taken his nets to the top of the cliffs (悬崖), and was laying them out in the sun when he heard the loud barking of a dog. He felt sure that it was Rover, and Rover was in trouble, so he looked over. There he saw it all.

“Bless her! It is the little one that was so kind-spoken to me this morning!” he cried, and he hurried to his sons' rooms.

“Quick, boys, quick!” he said. “Get to the boat, and row fast to the sea. There is a poor child there just waiting to be helped.” The fishermen lost no time, and soon little Maggie and Rover were rowed safely to land! Old Dan was waiting there to lift her out to give her into her mother's arms.

“It was the penny that did it, madam,” he said to Mrs. Weston later. “I saw Rover looking at her when she put the penny. And I am thinking he had been looking after her all the day.”

Some years later, Rover came to Maggie's home with a little note, in which was written—“Will Maggie help Rover?—his master is dead.”

“ Ask not what your country can do for you--ask what you can do for your country.” It's a famous quote from US president John F, Kennedy's inaugural(就职) speech in 1961.

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the social networking site Facebook, must agree with Kennedy. The 33-year-old American donated $100 million to the public schools in New Jersey, US.

Who is this young billionaire? How did he make his fortune?

Thirteen years ago, Zuckerber was a computer geek(怪才) at Harvard University. As a second-year student, he set up a website to put the “face books” --photos of incoming first-year students online. The website, where people were able to share personal information, was a success at once.

Zuckerberg first opened Facebook to high school students and then to everyone. Greeting such as “Have you checked your Facebook page today?” and “Do your ‘friends' know what you ate for breakfast?” became a part of American life. Now Facebook is the most popular site in the world with 1.7 billion users.” I could have never imagined all of the ways people would use Facebook when we were getting started thirteen years ago,” Zuckerberg wrote in a recent blog.

Zuckerberg's dream is to make the Internet a more connected place. The mission(任务)could become profitable for Facebook. The more people share information about themselves online, the more money Facebook will make selting advertising. Zuckerberg is already worth $34 billion, according to Forbes.

Yet the billionaire keeps his own life out of the public eye. At the company, it is said that he sits among a sea of desks like hundreds of workers. A visitor to Facebook might not even spot Zuckerberg in T-shirt and jeans. He usually takes one two-week vacation each year with his wife Priscilla Chan, a Chinese American. On the weekends, it is reported that he roasts pig and goat in his backyard for friends and takes Chinese lessons.

The Social Network, a movie based on Zuckerberg's story, came out in 2010. It became one of the most popular films of that year.

Fleming saw many soldiers die from infections (感染) in their wounds as he worked in a hospital during World War I. This made Fleming decide to find a way to help the body fight infections.

In September 1928, Fleming left some glass dishes on a bench in his laboratory for two weeks. When he came back, he noticed something puzzling. Bacteria (细菌) were growing on all the glass dishes except one. On this dish mould (霉菌) had started to grow—the kind found on old bread. The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing. Fleming called it "mould juice". He tried it on other bacteria, and it killed them, too. Fleming became wild with joy and named it penicillin.

Unfortunately, Fleming's boss thought he was wasting his time and it was impossible to kill bacteria at that time. Fleming did a few more experiments with penicillin, and he also wrote about it so other scientists could learn about it. However, because no one seemed interested in his discovery, he forgot about penicillin and started to work on other things.

In 1939, Ernest Chain, a scientist, and his boss, Howard Florey, were looking for medicines that could kill bacteria. They discovered Fleming's notes and decided to test penicillin. In 1940, they gave penicillin to some sick mice, who survived later. But those who didn't get it died. Florey declared: "It looks like a miracle!" By 1943, the final tests on humans were finished successfully and the world had its first antibiotic (抗生素) medicine.

Maybe you often have arguments 1 your parents about clothes, homework, friends and many other things. But what's going on when your parents fight with each other? Most teenagers feel sad or afraid when their parents fight. They might think their parents don't love each other any more and that their arguments will 2 to a divorce(离婚).

In fact, it is 3 for parents to disagree and argue sometimes. They might disagree on important things like jobs and family decisions. They might even disagree on little things that don't seem important at all — like what's for dinner. Maybe sometimes parents feel so strongly about their 4 that it may lead to arguments. However, these arguments often end quickly. Parents may say sorry and make up, and the family 5 to a normal situation.

As a family member, you should 6 what it really means when your parents fight. When your parents get angry with each other, they might say things they don't really 7 . Most people may lose their cool. So if your parents are fighting, don't worry too much about it. Try to find a good 8 to solve it.

If your parents' fighting really 9 you, you might find it hard to sleep or go to school. If this happens, try talking to your parents about their behavior. They may not even 10 it until you tell them how their argument has affected you. You can also tell it other relatives, a teacher or a close friend.

Just remember that no family is perfect and arguments are common in every family.
