Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. He was reelected President in 1864 but he was shot in 1865.
On April14, after a very busy day, President Lincoln and his wife went to the theatre. When they entered the theatre, the people rose in their seats and cheered. Lincoln smiled and bowed to the people below when he went into his box. Lincoln sat in a large chair at the left, his wife next to him, and then the play began.
President Lincoln was very happy and pleased. In the middle of the play, a young man entered the theatre and walked slowly towards the President's box. Opening the door so quietly that no one heard him, the man entered the box. No eyes saw him, but a second later every ear heard a gunshot. Smoke was seen coming from the President's box. The theatre was filled with shouting, madly excited people.
Lincoln's head had fallen down quietly on his breast; his arms had fallen, too. And the smile was still on his lips. He was shot through the head. He died the next morning.
