阅读理解

My father, who was always drunk and angry, beat me more and more every day. He always locked the door when he went away and kept the key in his pocket. One day I found. an old saw (锯子)that he hid in the roof. When I was alone in the house, I started to make a hole on the floor under the big table.

The next day my father said, "Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast.

Quickly! And don't try anything. Remember, I'm watching you!"

While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby.

"A boat!" I thought, happily, "This is my chance to escape. I'll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight!"

When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making the hole.

"I did a good job, "I thought, looking at the hole. "Now I'll get my father's gun. I have a plan. "

I looked outside the window and there was nobody there. I quickly escaped through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. Luckily, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig's blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it on my father's ax(斧子)with some of the pig's blood.

I took the pig's body outside and put it in a big bag with some rocks, and threw it into the river.

"This way people will think      ▲  !" I thought. "They'll come and look for my body in the river." This idea made me smile.

I waited until it was dark and got into the boat and went to Jackson's Island. I knew about Jackson's Island because Tom, Ben, Joe and I had a lot of fun adventures there.

How do you win a Nobel Prize for writing? Here's the secret from a previous winner: make it short, keep it real, and work hard.

Canadian author Alice Munro, 82, was awarded the 2013 Nobel Prize in literature. She is known for her short stories about personal relationships of ordinary people, usually women.

Munro was born into a farming family in Ontario. The family was very poor. Munro did a lot of physical work as a young girl. She decided to be a writer at the age of 12. Now Munro turns her hard childhood into great writing ideas. The story Dear Life, for example, opens with a description of the neighborhood in which Munro grew up. Also, she talks about her poor relationship with her mother in many of her stories, such as Lives of Girls and Women and Friend of My Youth.

Since she published her first book in 1968, Munro has won many awards, with the Nobel Prize as her biggest honor. But Munro doesn't see herself as a talented(有天赋的) writer.

“I'm the opposite of a writer with a quick gift. I don't grasp it very easily at all, the‘it' being whatever I'm trying to do,” she said.

Do you dream of becoming an author while sadly admitting you are not that talented? Munro has a tip for you: use notebooks and write a lot.

“I have lots of notebooks that contain(包含) this writing,” she said. But it helps her sort out (整理) her mind. “Stories would just be working in my head for so long that when I started to write I was deep into them.”

27- year- old Pei Haozheng is skilled in creating artworks by using paper. In his eyes, a single piece of paper can make a big difference. He can fold it into anything, from daily objects to ancient people.

Born in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, Pei started folding paper when he was a little kid, because paper was cheap and easy to get. At first, he learned folding from his friends and parents, and later he copied the style from books. From cranes to planes, he was fascinated by(着迷于) the magic world made by paper. Every day, he spent hours folding paper.

In order to improve his folding skills, Pei taught himself through origami(折纸工艺) books. As the number of his works grew, so did the quality. His hard work paid off(得到回报) and then Pei began to create more complex(复杂的) designs.

Pei won the International Origami Internet Olympiad in 2017, combining the art with Chinese cultural ideas. For the event's final task, he folded an ancient Chinese woman holding a mirror from a piece of hand made xuanzhi, a kind of rice paper. The artwork caught the judges'(裁判的) eye with its special shape and Eastern style. In September2022, Pei even set the Guinness World Record for most origami flowers made from a single piece of paper.

Although people might be amazed at the complexity of the designs and skills needed to produce the artworks, Pei is always willing to keep trying new artworks. He said, "I get inspiration from Chinese culture and of course, I want to help Chinese culture go global(走向世界). "
