John James Audubon loved all kinds of birds. He spent his life studying them. He painted all the birds of North America.

    John James Audubon was born in Haiti in 1785. When he was a young boy, he moved to France with his family. His father was in the French Navy. He had a farm in the United States. When John was 18, his father sent him to the farm, hoping John would take care of it. But John didn't want to do that. He wanted to hunt, fish, and draw birds. John drew lots of pictures of birds. He wanted to make them look real.

    In 1808, John married Lucy Bakewell and they moved to Kentucky. John and a friend went into business there. They ran a shop. John really didn't like working in the shop. The business soon failed. John wanted to paint full-time. Lucy agreed to help. She got a teaching job to support the family. By that time, they had two young sons.

    John wanted his bird paintings made into a book. He finally did find someone to print his bird pictures in a book. Many people wanted John Audubon's book. Although his book was a great success, John wasn't happy with it. He wanted to show every bird found in North America. By 1838, John finished a great work. It wasn't just one book. It was an amazing set of four books called The Birds of America. It had many paintings. Today, these paintings are very famous.

    Long long ago, there was a crowd of antelopes(羚羊)in the forest. In this crowd there was1wise teacher. He was admired by everyone because he taught the young the tricks and strategies of survival. One day, his younger sister brought her son 2 him and asked him to teach3was important to antelopes. She said, "Dear brother, this is my son, Dick. Please teach him the tricks and strategies of survival. The teacher said to Dick, "You 4 come at this time tomorrow for your 5 lesson."

    At first, Dick came to have lessons on time every day. But soon, Dick became 6 in playing games with others, so he began to cut classes.7, he didn't realize how dangerous it could be for a young antelope 8 learned nothing but games.

    Unfortunately, one day the young antelope stepped in a trap. Knowing Dick 9, his mother was worried. She went to her brother and 10 him "My brother, how is my son? Have you taught him the tricks and strategies of survival? The teacher replied, "My dear sister, I tried 11 best to teach him, but your son did not want to learn the tricks and strategies of survival. He cut classes. How could I possibly teach him?"

    At this time, they heard that Dick 12 in a trap. They hurried to rescue him before it was too late. Dick was too scared 13 and regretted deeply.

    One day, I was waiting for my friend at the bus station. A man came to sell1and I just smiled and said thank you. I didn't know if it was because of my smile, the young man came closer and stood2me and started talking to me. "You know, I wasn't born like this, selling shoes. I had a family, but one day my life just3upside down and all was gone," he said. He told me that his wife took away all his money, sold his car and the house. I stood next to him and listened, but I was still6how someone could be so open to a total stranger like that. Then I realized that some people get7in that way. We often meet people with troubles in their hearts. For some of them, there isn't anybody to listen to them,8I've learned to be kind to them. I always spare my time to listen to them. By doing this, the one9listens can not only help others but also himself, because he gets to learn something from what others10and see other sides of life. This will make the world a better place to live in for all of us.

    For most people, summer holidays mean sun, sea and sand, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. She had a holiday full of ice and snow. She and her family travelled across Greenland! Starting just above the Arctic Circle (北极圈), Sarah's family used dogsleds with kites to cross the world's biggest island.

    Sarah says {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. "There is only snow, ice, and more snow. " The family travelled 15 miles a day for 22 days, moving faster when strong winds pushed along their kites.

    Then the weather became a bit hot for the dogs to pull sleds during the day, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. The Landrys lived in tents, ate dried food, and took baths with heated water. When they weren't travelling, they played with kites and made snowmen. Using their mobile phones, the family could send and get emails even from Greenland's ice cap! The road to the top was icy and dangerous.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. "Icebergs (冰山) were so bright, just like the rising sun." said Sarah. Now she and her family have returned home, {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Next holiday, they are going to the South Pole.
