Paul and Jason were brothers who lived and worked on neighbouring farms. For 35 years they farmed side by side, sharing machinery and goods as needed, without a single problem.

    However, one autumn, things changed. It began with a tiny disagreement about a horse, which grew into a major difference. The difference led to angry words, followed by weeks of silence between the two brothers.

    One morning there was a knock on Paul's door. He opened it and saw a builder holding his toolbox." I'm looking for a few days' work," the builder said." Are there any jobs here I could help with?"

   "Yes," answered Paul, extremely pleased to see the builder." I do have a job for you. Look at that farm across the creek(小溪). That's my brother's farm. That creek used to be a grass field, but last week my brother dug a path from the river and made the creek. But I'll go him one better. See that pile of wood? I want you to build me a fence, two metres tall, so 1 won't need to see him anymore."

    The builder said thoughtfully." I think I understand the situation and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."

    Paul had business in town that day and left the builder to his work. When he returned, the builder had just finished his job. Paul was shocked. Instead of a fence there was a bridge, stretching from one side of the creek to the other.

    As Paul stood on the bridge, staring in amazement, his younger brother Jason, came across, and took Paul's hand." You are a good man to have built this bridge after all I've done," said Jason.

    Then, Paul, with tears in his eyes, said to the builder who was packing his bag to go," Thank you so much. Please stay. I have much more for you to do."

   "I'd love to." the builder said quietly," but, I have many more bridges to build."

    Tomas Edison was born in 1847. Edison was in school for only three months, but he asked a lot of strange questions. His teacher did not understand him and said that he was not bright and was not worth teaching. His mother took him out of school and taught him herself. The boy was soon reading books for grow-ups. He showed special interest in science.

    Once his mother was ill. The doctor said she needed an operation at once. But it was night and the oil lamp in the room gave poor light. Edison thought hard and had an idea. He put all the oil lamps he could find on a long table. Then he placed a big mirror behind them. The room became quite bright. So the doctor could operate and his mother was saved.

    At the age of twelve, Edison began selling candy, sandwiches and newspapers on a train. In his spare time, he printed a newspaper on the train and sold copies to the railway workers.

    One day in August, 1862, Edison saw a boy playing on the tracks at a station. A train was coming near quickly, and the boy was too frightened to move. Edison rushed out and carried the boy to safety. The boy's father was the station master. He was so thankful that he taught Edison telegraphy(电报学). Edison soon became very good at it and later he left home to work in different cities. This gave him a start in his life. He was then just a boy of sixteen.

A friend wrote me a letter a few weeks ago. He felt 1 at the time. He 2 his letter with this question: "We can't change this crazy world we live in, can we?"

I 3 to him and started my own letter with these words: "Yes, we most certainly can!" I can still remember someone who changed my world. She was the 4 teacher at my primary school. I liked her music class and I wanted to impress (留下印象) her. However, I didn't know 5 to play any instruments.

One day, she let me try playing her guitar. I did my best, but could only stumble along (断断续续地弹奏). When I finished playing, I put my 6 down. "I guess I am not very good," I told her. She looked at me with her 7 eyes, smiled at me and said, "We are all good at something. You just need to find out what you are good at. Then, you can share it with the world."

Those simple words changed me. They 8 a seed (种子) in my heart that continues to grow to this day. They made me realize that I have something good inside of me. I just had to find it and share it.

Can you change the world? Yes, you can! You can change it through one choice, one person or one kind act at a time. 9 you have to do is to share your goodness. My mother once said, "You needn't force yourself to do 10 things, but small things with great love." So make your love great.

When it comes to Chinese paper-cutting, many think of typical works like the Chinese characters Fu, meaning luck, or xi, meaning happiness. To change those stereotypes(固有印象) and make paper-cutting more creative, Ye Kaiyuan, a paper-cutting artist from Zhangzhou, Fujian Province, worked many years to make the traditional art more modern and fashionable.

 As a child, Ye would draw and cut. He even won second place in a national competition. In the summer of 2012, he held his first show of his own paper-cuttings. It turned out to be a great success.

 In the traditional way to the skill, cutting comes first, then dyeing(染色). But Ye tries to dye first and then cut. "This means you will not know the final color of your work, which is interesting," he said.

 For Ye, the lines in each paper-cutting are an expression of feelings. He always carries notebooks to write down his ideas. The idea for his work called A Picture of Two Fish came when he saw salted fish at a store. Other inspirations(灵感) come from his observation(观察) of things such as fruit and visits to different places.

 The creative process is slow. It took Ye two weeks to draw and make Farewell My Concubine(《霸王别姬》). He did not cut two of the characters in this story. Instead, he used flowers and curves(曲线) to represent Yu Ji — the heroine of the story.
