The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. It's said that Han Xin, the leader of an army wanted to dig a tunnel (隧道) into a king's palace. Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in autumn to give thanks for a good harvest. They were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had their first son. Today in Japan, flying kites is seen as part of a celebration at the beginning of a new year. And kite festivals are held each year in many parts of the country. Kites have been used for science purposes in the western world. The United States Weather Bureau has used box kites to collect weather data for 35 years. How amazing the kites are! Weifang in Shangdong Province is famous for its kites. Weifang International Kite Festival, one of the most famous kite festivals, is held here in April every year. Do you know sugar painting? It is one of China's most popular folk art {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.
It is said that Chen Zi'ang, a great poet in the Tang Dynasty, created sugar painting. Chen liked brown sugar, but{#blank#}2{#/blank#} way of eating it was different from others'. He first melted (使熔化) the sugar {#blank#}3{#/blank#} heating it. Then he shaped the hot sugar into animals, flowers, plants, and so on. Once the sugar cooled down, it {#blank#}4{#/blank#} sweet artworks.
