The road in front of my school is not very wide. Every afternoon when school is over, the road becomes very crowded as children, bicycles, cars and buses fill the road. Sometimes a policeman is there to help control the traffic. However, we still have to be careful enough to stop accidents from happening.

It was Day 1 of our vacation on Cortes, a beautiful quiet island. "iPhone, iPhone, iPhone," my son kept moaning (呻吟). In front of him was a big window of facing the blue ocean. And a Coo gentle wind was coming in from the door. Clearly, he saw and felt none of it.

Back at home, I'd soon give up and hand the phone over to him after five minutes of listening to this kind of moaning

But not here. Before we left, I had told my, 10-year-old son the rule-no e-mails, no Facebook, no video games, and no iPhone. We came here to get away from them all' Here we were on our first day and already, he couldn't stand it.

The next few days passed in peace.

On Day 6, my son was lying beside me on the beach, watching the sun going down. He was playing with the sand.     Haiyan is 7 years old. Her parents gave her an iPad as a gift for her birthday. A month later, her eyesight(视力)dropped to 300 degrees. This is serious for such a young child.

Many children in China are facing the same problem: iPad using is bringing problems to their eyesight. The problem is so common that newspapers even call the iPad the "No. 1 killer of children's eyesight!"

"There are about 30 shortsighted children coming every day, "said Hu Dali, an eye doctor at Guiyang Aier Eye Hospital. "Half of those children have poor eyesight because they have played with phones and iPads for too long. "

Doctors and scientists say children's vision(视觉)is not yet fully developed and their eyes get tired more easily. The screen of an iPad uses very bright(明亮的)LED backlight. If children look at an iPad screen for a long time, their eyes do not have time to rest. This will make their eyesight worse over time.

Doctors advise that users should hold their iPads between 40-60 centimeters(厘米)away from them. The brightness of the screen should be comfortable for children. Parents should also stop their children from using an iPad for more than one hour every day.

There are many different kinds of disasters around the world. As an adult you know what to do during a disaster, but what about the children? Some adults think it would probably never happen to them, so they don't teach their children what to do. Before it's too late, here are ways to help you prepare your children for a disaster.

Educate: It is always good to let your children know about possible disasters. This doesn't mean children have to live in fear. When teaching them about disasters, keep the conversation positive (积极的) by telling them there is a solution (解决办法) to the disaster. Keep the conversations short, allow for questions and answer them honestly.

Prepare: Always be prepared. And that is the best piece of advice for children. For example, when preparing for bad weather, get the tools you need, like candles, radios, food, water and medicine. Teach your children what is needed in certain disasters so that they know what is available for them, if ever needed.

Plan: You should always have a plan for you and your children for any dangerous situation. Write out a simple list that they can read. The plan could start with "listen to an adult's advice and/or call 119".

Practise: Once you have got the correct safety tools and worked out the right plan, practise every few months. Practising what to do during a disaster with your children will help them if the time comes.

Disasters can't be avoided but they can be lessened once you are prepared and ready for one.
