    Long long ago there was a poor farmer called Fred. Fred and his wife, Doris, lived 1 together in their small old house. One winter night, the Luck Fairy(仙女) visited them.

    Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence can be more useful than crying for help. That's what the story I've heard recently tells me.

    The young man was born in1982 in a1 family in a small town. When he was only 11, his father became mentally ill and one day came back with an abandoned(被遗弃的) baby girl. A year later, his mother left home with his younger brother because she couldn't2 hard life and pressure from her mad husband. The 12-year-old boy began to3 his whole family: he took care of not only his sick father, but also the little girl. At the same time, he didn't give up studying. Later he went to college.     With a hat by his feet, a blind boy sat on the steps of a building. He held up a sign which said," I'm blind, please help."

    Only a few people put1in the hat. A man was walking by. He dropped some coins into the hat, then turned the sign2wrote some words, put the sign back and left.

    Once, a king showed two men a large basket in the garden. He told them to fill it with water from a well（井）. After they1 their work, he left, saying, "When the Sun is down, I will come and see your work."

    Soon after one of them said, "What's the use of doing the foolish work? We can2fill the basket."3man answered, "That is none of your business."     As he poured the last bucket of water into the basket, he saw a bright thing in it. He picked it up. It was a beautiful gold ring. Just then the king came.8he saw the ring, he knew that he had found the kind of man he wanted. He told him to keep the ring for himself. "You9so well in this little thing," he said, "10now I know I can believe you with many things."
