One day, a farmer was walking along a road with his son Thomas when they saw a horseshoe on the ground. The father said to his son, "Look at the horseshoe on the ground. Go and1the horseshoe and put it in your bag, my son." But Thomas said, "If I do so, it will waste my time." His father said nothing but picked it up himself. When they2a nearby town, they had a rest. There the farmer sold the horseshoe and3some strawberries with the money.

    The father and the son went on walking. The sun was high up in the4. They soon drank up all their water and there was not a house or even a tree for them to have a rest. Thomas felt5thirsty to walk on. At that time, his father gave him a strawberry and he6ate it. After a while, his father gave him another strawberry and once again, his son got it quickly and put it in his mouth.

When Thomas had eaten up all the strawberries, his father said to him, "My dear son, if you picked up that8, you would have your own strawberries to eat. My town is a great place to live. It's the best place to enjoy your free time. There are three movie theaters in town. They are all good, but the one nearest my house is the best. Shopping is always easy here. There are many shops and most of them are popular. They sell very fashionable clothes. The prices are also lower than those in other towns, so students love to shop here.

There are also a lot of video and music stores. They are very popular with students. I go to the music store every week to buy a new CD. The most crowded place for students to hang out （闲逛） is the park. Everyone goes there, and it's really interesting.

Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. First, he weighed the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight. 

Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled both pots with water. He put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Then he put the crown into the other pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl. 

"Look at this, " said Archimedes to King Hiero. "A crown made completely of gold displaces less water than a crown made of gold and another metal. This crown displaced more water than gold of the same weight, so I'm certain that it's not completely made of gold. "

"The crown maker tricked me, didn't he? What a bad man he is!" shouted King Hiero. He then sent the crown maker to prison. 

Today, as I was shopping at Woolworths, a kind worker surprised me with a beautiful bunch of flowers. It was my unexpected act of1 that let me know the power of simple words.

In the universe (宇宙), as we all know, there is the Sun, the Moon, the Earth and a large number of stars. Through our Geography lessons, we know that the Sun is a star, the Earth is a planet and the Moon is a satellite (卫星 ). We also know the Earth goes around the Sun and the Moon goes around the Earth. We have day and night because the Earth keeps turning all the time. When our part of the Earth turns to the Sun, it is day. When our part of the Earth turns away from the Sun, it is night. 

Just because the Moon is closer to the Earth than the Sun, it looks much bigger than the Sun. Big things will look smaller when they are farther and small things also look bigger when they are nearer. 

The Sun is big enough to give out strong light. The Moon can't give out any light at all, but it looks quite bright, too. Why? In fact, the light from the Moon comes from the Sun. The Moon looks much big- ger and brighter than the stars, but in fact the stars are much bigger and brighter than the Moon. They look smaller than the Moon also because they are farther away from the Earth.
