In many European countries it is normal to have a long break in the middle of the day when all members of the family return to their houses to eat together. This is not very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} in Britain because normally it is a long way from the place of work or school to the home. The {#blank#}2{#/blank#} people often have a big breakfast before they go to work and the meal at midday is not{#blank#}3{#/blank#} _with the members of the family but with workmates or schoolmates. Lunch is normally{#blank#}4{#/blank#} between 12:30 pm and 1:30 pm. Most people finish work at five thirty. It often take at _{#blank#}5{#/blank#} an hour to get home from the school or workplace so people eat their meal {#blank#}6{#/blank#} "dinner" between 6:30 pm and 9 pm.
On Sundays people don't have to work so they take the {#blank#}7{#/blank#} to eat together with their family. Sunday lunch is {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the best meal of the week and many of the meals which are considered real British food are eaten for Sunday lunch, such as roast beef and pudding.
{#blank#}9{#/blank#} everyone in Britain understands that "breakfast" is the first meal of the day, there is a lot of confusion(混乱) about the words for other meals such as "dinner, lunch, tea, high tea, elevenses, brunch, supper". And if you ask a British person what these words {#blank#}10{#/blank#} , most of them will give you a different answer according to what part of the country they are from.

    When I was waiting for a bus at a station, I saw a young man get into a telephone box near the station. After a short time, he came out and{#blank#}1{#/blank#} very sad (难过的). As he saw me, he came over.

    "Good afternoon, sir," he said. "{#blank#}2{#/blank#} was Abraham Lincoln born, do you know?"

    I felt a little {#blank#}3{#/blank#} at his words. "Something may be wrong (有毛病的) with him," I thought. Then he asked {#blank#}4{#/blank#} and I could see that he was not joking (开玩笑). So I thought for a minute and {#blank#}5{#/blank#} him that Abraham Lincoln was born in 1809.

    The young man thanked {#blank#}6{#/blank#}  turned around and walked into the telephone box again. A few minutes later, he came out {#blank#}7{#/blank#}. He thanked me again and told me that he wanted to make a telephone call to his friend but he {#blank#}8{#/blank#} his telephone number.

    "You {#blank#}9{#/blank#} me remember it," he said. "His telephone number is '180909', and you can remember it easily {#blank#}10{#/blank#} you know when the great man was born."

    Travelling by train is very comfortable. Most of the trains are air-conditioned. Jim {#blank#}1{#/blank#} chooses a non-smoking section, taking a seat by the window so he can enjoy the outside views. If it is a night train, the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} can be more exciting. He just sleeps the whole night and the next day he will be in a new city. The train {#blank#}3{#/blank#} food around the clock.

    Traveling by train has another advantage: you may meet some old friends or you can listen to people talking about something of your interest. Last week when Jim was on a train, he met a primary school classmate. They didn't expect that they could meet {#blank#}4{#/blank#} that way. They talked a lot.
