Teen Creative Writing Residency(培训) at Atlantic Center for the Arts

Join other teens for an intensive ten-day writing residency with Master Writers at the world renowned Atlantic Center for the Arts.

    The Residency

The Teen Creative Writing Residency is a summer writing residency that offers 9th―12th grade teens writing workshops and mentorship (辅导) by distinguished authors in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The Teen Creative Writing Residency will be held at Atlantic Center from July 13 through July 26, offering 21 teens from around the country an extraordinary opportunity to expand the power of their individual voices through writing workshops with Master Writers.

    Residency Schedule

Teen writers will join three Master Writers-in-Residence, one in each of the following genres (类型) ― poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. The mentorship with the Master Writers-in-Residence will be the focus, but the chance to have conversations with the other Visiting Writers and participating Teen Writers will be valuable.

Classes meet Monday―Friday for two hours of workshops. Teen writers will have the opportunity to focus on one genre, while also exploring the other forms of literature through workshops and conversation.

    Admission

The selection process for the unique literary residency opportunity will be competitive. Atlantic Center receives the applications, and the judges evaluate writing samples. As class sizes are kept small to provide the highest quality instruction, not all qualified writers may be accepted.

    Applications should include the following:

One: Cover Letter: Your name, address, age, phone number(s)

Two: Writing Sample: 3 pages: Your writing sample should be in your preferred form of literature.

As we all know, children are our future, and it's up to us to arm them with the tools to succeed. Sadly, today's children are sometimes being armed with more dangerous tools like weapons, drugs and gangs in the USA. Once a relatively peaceful environment, many schoolyards of today are becoming unsafe for both students and teachers.

Home schools are available to give you choices. Home schooling provides top-quality education, flexibility and freedom to create your own schedule. At Sunny Home School we believe the choice should be yours.

Thanks to modern technology, home schooling information is becoming readily available across the nation. A recent study by the ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) and TAP (Tests of Achievement and Proficiency) shows us that students of home schools do particularly well when compared with the nationwide average. In every subject at every grade level, students of home schooling scored obviously higher than those in public and private schools.

If you're new to home schooling, you may be asking yourself, “Will home schools really work for my children?”

Fact: A nationwide study using a random selection of 1,516 families found students of home schooling to be scoring, on average, at or above the 80th percentile (百分位的第80位) in all areas, on standardized achievement test. (Note: The national average on standardized achievement test is the 50th percentile.)

Collectively, the staff at Sunny Home School brings 65 years of experience in home schooling curriculum. We've placed students in the top 2% of the nation in math and many are successfully moving on to college.

One study found that of the home schooled students, 94% said home education prepared them to be independent persons.

You might think people all over the United States have Wi-Fi—wireless Internet service—and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the U.S. capital, Washington D.C. Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world.

There is a ban on Wi-Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic(电磁的)waves. Officials say the waves could disturb the signals the telescope receives.

For many Americans, a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s. To get there, you must read road signs—because there is no GPS service in the town. People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed.

The observatory(天文台)is one of the largest employers in the area. The federal National Science Foundation(NSF) spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center.

Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it. But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it.

People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi-Fi and mobile phones. “You know, instead of sitting here on our phones and other devices we're out fishing and hunting and going to each other's houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face-to-face.

The following are some of history's most inspirational women recommended by Therese Borchard.

    Who Was Mother Teresa? 66.00

Born in Macedonia, Mother Teresa(1910—1997)taught at St. Mary's High School, in Calcutta, India, but was forced to do something about the suffering and poverty. In 1950 she founded the Missionaries of Charity. Although her devotion to the poor is inspiring, it's her persistence(坚持不懈)through years of doubt, as recorded in her private journals, that inspired me the most.

The Diary of a Young Girl 55.10

In The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank (1929—1945) documented her life in hiding from 1942 to 1944 during the German Occupation of the Netherlands. She is a role model of honesty, strength, and hope for me — that even in the most miserable circumstances, you can lead with love.

    A Life of Discovery 111.10

"Do one thing every day that scares you," wrote Eleanor Roosevelt (1884—1962). She had a lot to choose from, as her life was full of challenges. Eleanor inspires me to bravely deal with problems that matter to me, and to find her way through life's trials and hardships with gracefulness and determination.

    Story of My Life 32.50

A deaf-blind author from Alabama, Helen Keller (1880—1968) provides a powerful example of a woman through two major disabilities to achieve a meaningful life. "We could never learn to be brave and patient if there were only joy in the world," she said. Her attitude of hope and optimism inspires me to use my suffering to become a better and wiser person, to go beyond my pain into service of others.
