Last summer, my family and I went to England and we 1 two weeks in Cornwall. It 2 us five hours to get there by car. We stayed in a hotel near a lake. We did a lot of different   3  there: we went for long walks, played games, went shopping and swam in the lake.

    I played happily at first, but then  4 terrible happened. One morning I went to the  5  near the hotel by 6  .     Andreas watched the clock moving very slowly. This was his last class of the day - biology. Usually, Andreas really liked biology. But today was 1. Today there were tryouts（预赛） for the basketball team after school.

    There was only one thing that Andreas liked more than biology: basketball. Because of the tryouts, Andreas had been 2 for months.

    Tyrell had been Andreas's best friend since kindergarten. He was also trying out for the basketball team that afternoon. Andreas was glad he'd have his best friend by his 3.

    Suddenly the bell rang and class was over. Andreas and Tyrell walked down to the gym: When they got there, Andreas's heart sank (下沉). There were at least 60 boys crowded there, but the basketball team only had 4 for 20 people. Andreas and Tyrell looked at each other. What if only one of them made the team?     When the tryouts were over, the coach said he was posting a list of who made the team the next day before school. Andreas felt his stomach tighten. He knew he had played well, 7 was it good enough?

    "It's OK," said Tyrell. "I'm sure you made it. I just don't know if I did."

    "Playing on the basketball team wouldn't be any 8 without you," a little upset.

    They walked the rest of the way home in silence.

The next morning Andreas hurried to school and went to see the 9. Tyrell's name was at the very top—--he had made it! But Andreas didn't see his name anywhere.

    "Andreas!" He heard Tyrell's happy voice. "We made it!"

    "What do you mean?" asked Andreas. "My name's not on there."

Tyrell 10 up the first sheet of paper and pointed to Andrea's name at the very top of the second sheet. They shouted and gave each other a high-five（击掌）. They were going to be on the basketball team together.

    A group of frogs were traveling through the woods. Unluckily two of them fell into a hole. When the other frogs saw how 1 the hole was, they told the two frogs that they couldn't be saved. The two frogs didn't 2 them and tried to jump out of the hole. The other frogs kept telling them to 3. Finally, one of the frogs believed what the other frogs were saying and 4. He fell down and died. The other frog continued to jump as 5 as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs shouted at him to stop. But he jumped even harder and 6 made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, "Didn't you 7 us?" The frog explained to them that he was 8. He thought that they were 9 him all the time.

    There is power of life and death in 11. An encouraging word to someone who is 12 can lift him up and help him 13 while a discouraging word can even 14 him.

    Be careful of what you say. Speak hopefully to those who cross your path. It is sometimes 15 to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way. Remember anyone can say words that can encourage another person to continue his way in difficult times.

    Kevin sat at the desk in his study, pencil in hand. He had to write a story for his English class by Friday. "I don't know what to1," he complained to his dog, who was asleep at his feet. Kevin was talkative when speaking to his friends, yet he had2finding words he had to write.

    By bedtime Kevin had drawn a picture of his dog smiling. He had drawn a tree with its branches(树枝) blowing in a high wind. He had also written a3asking his friend to go to the movies on Saturday.4he had not written a single word of his story.

    That night Kevin sat at his desk, and this was what he wrote: "One Saturday Tom went to meet his friend at the11it looked as if it might rain, so Tom12his umbrella. Suddenly a big storm blew in. The noise of the wind13like Tom's dog Spotty. Spotty really hated storms and barked whenever he wanted to be let inside. Then Tom saw Spotty running after him down the busy street, barking. The sound was full of blame(责备). Tom felt14because he had left Spotty outside. He turned and headed home with Spotty. Tom let Spotty in the door just and the rain started to pour down."

    Kevin had a story after all. The last thing he did was to write his name15at the top of the page.
