牛津深圳版九年级下册Module2 Environmental problems Unit 3 The environment同步练习

根据短文理解,完成下列各题。

"Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell." This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown person who lived in Rome in AD 53 wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improved the quality of our lives?

Picture this, you're rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave up feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no car, not even any electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they live a simpler live.

One family in the UK went "back in time" to see what life was like without all the inventions we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10 and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones. The grandmother, Lyn, said, "The more things you have, the more difficult life becomes." The boys said they fought less. Probably, they said, because there was less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a "trendy, beer-drinking granny, to one who cooked things"

A、they loved to live simple lives B、they wanted to know how people lived with our modern inventions  C、they were troubled by modern inventions  D、living in a different time would be a lot of fun for them
(4)、According to the passage, which is NOT right?

A、People who live far away from noisy cities often seem to be happier. B、An unknown Roman was sure that the quality of life would get better.  C、The family had some changes when they lived in a 1940s house.  D、With the improvement of our lives, we often feel stressed and tired.
(5)、The passage is mainly about _____.

A、problems with technology  B、improvements of our lives with technology  C、changes happening to technology    D、the importance of technology.
举一反三
Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no.” or “we don't know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we sill soon contact these beings(人;生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak. “And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes(高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It's a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other.”

What do you think is an important social skill? I think it's being polite. It can help you make friends, show respect and achieve success. Here are some tips to help you be polite.

Greet people politely. You can be polite by offering a proper greeting. When first meeting or greeting someone, give him a warm smile. It shows that you are in good spirits and are happy to see him. Also, shake hands to show respect.

Make small talks. Instead of jumping right into business. You can make small talks first. Talk about their lunch or their day. Listen carefully and pay attention to what they are saying to you. Show them you're interested by asking questions.

Congratulate other people on their success. When others do well, offer them your praise. If you meet a friend who has recently graduated, won a match, or got a new job, congratulate him.

Avoid uncomfortable topics. Some topics can make people uncomfortable. You might hurt other people's feelings if you talk about them. Try to keep your conversation in the pleasant areas.

Make eye contact (接触). When in conversation with someone, look them in the eye when you're speaking. Keeping eye contact shows that you are paying attention. However, don't stare at people all the time.

 阅读下面材料,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。

When you go to the park, you might notice many older people listening to audiobooks (有声书). Audiobooks have become quite welcome these days. Why are more and more people choosing audiobooks over paper books? Is listening to an audiobook just as beneficial (有益的) as reading a book?

Reading needs us to focus (集中) all our attention(注意) on the words in a book, and we also need to find time and a place to sit down and read. However, you can listen to audiobooks any time and any place you like, and it gives your eyes a break, too.

But the big question is, do we get knowledge from audiobooks as effectively (有效地) as we do from paper books? Researchers did a study to find the answer. Volunteers (志愿者) in Group One were asked to listen to an audiobook while volunteers in Group Two read a book of the same content (内容). It turned out that they recalled the same amount of information, whether they listened to it or read it.

Another study published in the Journal of Neuroscience further supported (支持) the result above. In the study, researchers scanned people's brains when they listened to and read books, and they learned how their brains worked. The result showed that listening to audiobooks activates (激活) almost the same parts of the brain as reading does.

However, some people still believe that they learn better from reading paper books. One reason might be that when we listen to audiobooks, we are often multitasking (处理多个任务). "If you're trying to learn while doing two things, you're not going to learn as well," Daniel Willingham, a professor of psychology at the University of Virginia, told The New York Times.
