A few days ago, I ran into（撞上）a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, "Excuse me too, I wasn't even watching for you.” We were very polite, this stranger and I.  Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.

       Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around (转身), I nearly knocked her down  "Get out of the way!" I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying.

That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you'll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself-pink, yellow, and your favourite blue.''

       When I heard this, I thought deeply: While meeting with a stranger, I was calm and polite; but with my daughter, I was not patient.  I felt sad and tears began to fall.

I quietly went to Betty's bed, "Wake up, my dear," I said. "Are these the flowers you picked for me?" She smiled, “I found them by the tree. I knew you'd like them, especially the blue.” I said, ‘‘I am so sorry that I treated (对待) you that way today." And she whispered（悄声地说）, “Mommy, that's okay- I still love you anyway.'' I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”

       That day Betty gave me a lesson on how to get along with each other in the family. I spent much time on work before and didn't realize how important family life was. I decided to do better in the future.

    Mr. and Mrs. Smith have just opened a small restaurant. In order to attract customers, they put a notice in front of the restaurant, which said “Meals on the House for Three Days.”

A.  He walked towards the restaurant and saw the notice. “American people are really strange. They even eat dinners on the house! But how can I get up to the top of the house? ” he said to himself.

B. “Doesn't your notice say ‘Meals on the House for Three Days'? Is it just a joke?” the foreign student answered.

C.  When they heard this, both Mr. Smith and the policeman laughed. “Don't you know what ON THE HOUSE means? Look it up in the dictionary.” the policeman said.

D. A foreign student who didn't know much English happened to pass by the restaurant on the second day. It was lunch time and he felt very hungry. “Well, here is a restaurant. I am going to have something to eat.”

E.  He looked around and found a ladder against a tree nearby. He was very glad. But as he reached the top he heard someone shouting at him, “Hey, what are you doing up there?” Mr. Smith was looking at him angrily and beside him was a policeman.

    Last Saturday I went to the Great Wall with some of my friends. It was a sunny day. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} They helped the elders with their bags, take photos for some their bags, take photos for some tourists and answered people's questions. Though they were very busy, they didn't stop to have a rest. We were moved when we saw this.

    Just at the moment, we saw a little boy standing alone and crying.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} From his answer we knew that he could not find his mother. We told him not worry about it and then we tried to get in touch with his mother with the phone number he gave us. Twenty minutes later, his mother turned up.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    That day we not only enjoyed the beauty of the Great Wall, but also felt the warmth of the society. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. We went over and asked what happened to him.

B. Every year thousands of tourists from all over the world come to visit this place of interest in China.

Smoke alarms(报警器)

    House fires cause many deaths each year and a large number of these fires are unfortunately set by children.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Kids must understand that they, d better not play with fire. You should keep matches and lighters out of their reach.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} The main job of such an alarm is to protect you while you're asleep. You should have a smoke alarm outside each bedroom and on each floor of your home. You ought to have two plans for getting out of your house if there is a fire and practise these plans in the dark with your family.

    A smoke alarm warns you of the danger. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Take action immediately. When you come to a closed door, check it with the back of your hand. If it feels hot, there may be smoke or fire behind the door, so take care. Once you are out of your house, call the fire department from a neighbor's house. If a family member or a pet is caught inside, you shouldn't go back in. Firemen know how to perform rescues safely {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Change the batteries at least once a year. You should use the test button each month to see if the alarm and batteries are still working. A smoke alarm lasts about ten years. You ought to change it even if it seems to be working.

    About two out of three fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke alarms.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Most of these deaths can be avoided.

B. But when you hear it, you don t have much time.

C. A smoke alarm is only good if it's working properly.

D. So, it's important to teach them that fire is a tool, not a toy.

    I have some good friends in my school. They live near our school. So it's very easy for them to get to school every day.

    Tina To get to school, I usually walk out and turn right at the post office. Then I walk along Bridge Street, Our school is on the right.

    Linda My house is near our school. To get there, I just have to cross the Green Street.

    Susan It's easy for me to get to school. 1 usually go down North Road and turn left. Our school is next to the park.

    Anna I walk along New Street. Then I turn right at the first crossing. Our school is on my left. I always walk to school. Walking is the best way to exercise.
