2016年中考英语真题试卷(湖北孝感卷)

阅读短文,然后根据其内容选择正确答案。

Dear mum and dad,

I'm writing this letter to you from the center of Australia. At themoment we're staying near Uluru—that's the aboriginal(土著) name for Ayers Rock. On the first day, we took a balloon tour over the rock, and I was surprised at how big it was: 3.6 kilometers long and 384 meters high. The colors of the rock are fantastic, and at different times of the day, they change from purple to red. The Aborigines are the first people of Australia, and the ancient aboriginal stories describe the spirits that created the world. Uluru is a center of Aboriginal culture.

The Australians have many British relatives. That's why they're like us in many ways. Their family life is similar to ours, and they enjoy the same food and hobbies. The food and drink that most Australians like are grapes, lamb, ham and especially wine that they make in the south of the country. They love all sports, but football is the most popular. Most Australians live near the coast, so they also love going to the beach, swimming and surfing.

Although it's December, it's summer over here. The sunshine is very bright, and near the coast the countryside is very green. There are lots of sheep in the fields and on the hills, but the outback(澳洲内陆) is more like a desert, full of rocks and sand.

The next day after we arrived at Uluru, we went on a camel(骆驼) ride. The camel that I rode had a bad temper. When I sat on its back, it became very angry and refused me. So everyone else thought it was very funny that my camel kept lying down…

Finally, later this evening, we're taking the plane back to Sydney and coming home, it's been a fantastic trip!

One day in ancient Greece, King Hiero asked a crown maker to make him a golden crown. At first, he was very happy with it.

"It's a nice crown, isn't it?" he asked his men. Later,

However, he began to doubt that it was a real golden crown. "Is it made completely of gold?" he wondered. He sent it to Archimedes and asked him to find out the truth.

"This problem seems difficult to solve. What should I do?" thought Archimedes.

Archimedes was still thinking about this problem as he filled his bath with water. When he got into the bath, some water ran over.

"That's it!" shouted Archimedes. "I know how to solve the king's problem!"

Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. First, he weighed the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight.

Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled both pots with water. He put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Then he put the crown into the other pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl.

"Look at this, " said Archimedes to King Hiero. "A crown made completely of gold displaces less water than a crown made of gold and another metal. This crown displaced more water than gold of the same weight, so I'm certain that it's not completely made of gold. "

"The crown maker tricked me, didn't he? What a bad man he is!" shouted King Hiero. He then sent the crown maker to prison.

Thousands of years ago, in the south of ancient China, there lived Shen Nong, a man who had an ox(牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.

The legend(传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei an inviting place for tourists. Traveling there is a unique experience, as you can see scenery of the four seasons from different altitudes(海拔).

"When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with ice," local people say of the special climate of Shennongjia.

Shennongjia is also home to 5,000 species of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bear.

One interesting and mysterious thing about Shennongjia is its legend of wild men. Some people once claimed(声称) that they saw big prints or big-foot creatures. Yet so far, scientists haven't proved it is true and some say they are just bears.

The beautiful place has received a new title. On July 17, 2016, Shennongjia Forestry District was added to United Nations World Heritage list as a natural site. China now has 50 world heritage sites(遗址), second only to Italy in the world.
