    In April 2014, the world's oldest known message in a bottle wasdiscovered floating in the Baltic Sea. It had spent 101 years lost in the ocean! The message was finally sent to the author's granddaughter.

    A German fisherman named Konrad Fischer found the brown bottle near Kiel, Germany. He said he nearly threw the bottle back into the water after pulling it out of a fishing net. Then he noticed something inside.

    The bottle in good condition contained a Danish postcard with two German stamps, dated May 17, 1913. Although dampness had made most of the writing illegible(字迹模糊的), the readable part of the message asked whoever found it to return it to an address in Berlin. It even contained two stamps to pay for postage.

    From the address, researchers found that the postcard was written by a man named Richard Platz, who was 20 years old when he wrote the message. While he was hiking on the Baltic coast with a nature appreciation group. he threw the bottle into the sea. Then the researchers began a search for any living relatives of his. Sure enough, they were able to find his 62-year-old granddaughter, Angela Erdmann, who still lives in Berlin.

  “It was almost unbelievable,”Erdmann said upon being presented with her grandfather's bottle and message.“That was a pretty moving moment. Tears rolled down my face."

    Erdmann never knew her grandfather,who died in 1946,but says that the discovery of the bottle has made her want to learn more about him.

    The bottle remained on display at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg until May 1st. After that, the researchers examined the postcard and tried to figure out the meaning of the rest of the message.

    Previously, the oldest message found in a bottle spent nearly 98 years at sea and was discovered in April 2012, according to Guinness World Records.

    We know that hugs make us feel cosy inside. And this feeling could actually ward off stress and protect the  immune (免疫) system,  according to a new research from Carnegie Mellon University.

    It's a well-known fact that stress can weaken the immune system. In this study, the researchers sought to determine whether hugs could protect individuals from the increased sensitivity to illness brought on by the particular stress that comes with interpersonal conflict.

    “We know that people experiencing ongoing conflicts with others are less able to fight off cold viruses. We also know that people who report having social support are partly protected from the effects of stress on psychological states, such as depression and anxiety, ” the study's lead author, psychologist Dr. Sheldon Cohen , said in a statement. “We have tested whether awareness of social support is equally effective in protecting us from sensitivity to infection caused by stress and also whether receiving hugs might partially account for those feelings of support and thus protect a person against infection.”

    In the experiment, over 400 healthy adults filled out a questionnaire about their perceived (感知到的) social support and also participated in a nightly phone interview for two weeks. They were asked about the frequency that they engaged in interpersonal conflict and received hugs that day.

    Then, the researchers exposed the participants to a common cold virus, and monitored them to assess signs of infection. They found that both perceived social support and more frequent hugs reduced the risk of infection associated with experiencing interpersonal conflict. Regardless of whether or not they experienced social conflicts, infected participants with greater perceived social support and more frequent hugs had less severe illness symptoms.

    “This suggests that being hugged by a trusted person may act as an effective means of conveying support and that increasing the frequency of hugs might be an effective means of reducing the effects of stress,” Cohen said. “The apparent protective effect of hugs may result from the physical contact itself or hugging being a behavioral indicator of support and closeness. Either way, those who receive more hugs are somewhat more protected from infection.”

For this discovery, Roentgen was awarded the first-ever Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901.

There was an encounter that later sparked scientists' investigations into using jellyfish as a greater source of food, as well as a potential ingredient in medicines and nutraceuticals. In the summer of 2013, while Stefano Piraino was wandering along the rocky shoreline, he noticed a washed-up jellyfish. Then, he tore off a piece and put it in his mouth. It was salty, crunchy and crispy from the sun. "It was very tasty, " remembers Piraino, a zoologist. After a few days of lying on the shore, their stinging cells(刺细胞)are deactivated, Piraino explains. Still, he warns that people should not eat jellyfish straight out of the sea, because raw jellyfish contains bacteria that can cause food poisoning. 

Recently, there have been numerous reports of jellyfish blooms—seasonal events where there is a large and sudden increase in jellyfish numbers. These population explosions break the balance of ocean ecosystems, and have the potential to harm biodiversity and reduce fish stocks. 

Some scientists, such as Piraino, believe one solution is broadening our palates(口味)since the world is in urgent need of sustainable food resources. Jellyfish can be integrated into traditional recipes and local cuisine. Not only are they high in protein, but the microalgae inside the cells of some jellyfish are rich in fatty acids. In fact, jellyfish is already eaten across Asia. In China, jellyfish has been eaten for more than 1, 000 years, with jellyfish salad a popular delicacy. 

Jonathan Houghton, a senior lecturer in marine biology, believes that jellyfish can be a better source of collagen(胶原蛋白). There are a number of companies already using jellyfish as a substitute(替代品) for cow and pig collagen, which is often used in medical treatments for humans. One British company says collagen from jellyfish offers a better choice, because their collagen can work with a wide variety of human cell types.
