Have you read any books by Washington Irving? Now I will tell you a story written by him. The name of the story is Rip Van Winkle, and it is also the name of the hero in this story. There are three characters in this story, Rip Van Winkle and his wife, Dame Van Winkle and their dog, Woof. Dame Van Winkle is a sharp-tongued (说话尖酸的、刻薄的) woman. Both Rip Van Winkle and the dog are terrified of her, even of her voice.
There is a scene that can describe how Rip Van Winkle and his dog feel in front of Dame Van Winkle:
Rip had just one way of replying to his wife's talk: he only put his head back on his shoulders, looked up toward heaven, and said nothing. . . True, in the woods, Woof was as brave as an honorable dog should be, but as soon as Woof entered the house, his head bent low, his tail lay on the ground or curled between his legs. He went around the house with a guilty look, watching Dame Van Winkle out of the corner of his eyes, ready to run from the room at the slightest sign of her displeasure.
This was the time when England ruled America. One day, Rip Van Winkle went into the mountain with his dog for an escape of his wife. He drank something given by some strangers and fell asleep. That was 20 years! His wife died and America got freedom from England, and I think that's what the story wants to tell us: both the poor man's independence and nation's independence.
Why does Irving's story attract people? Because he wrote so vividly(生动地). That sets me thinking: How he observed things so carefully? If you read through this story, you can't help smiling or laughing from time to time!

Don't be surprised if you see a car going down the road without a driver in Beijing these days. In March, 2018, Baidu was given a license to test its self-driving cars in Beijing, China Daily reported.
Self-driving cars have been in development since 2010, when Google announced that it was making such cars. Since then, companies like Tesla, Uber and Baidu have been working to produce and test their own self-driving cars.
Self-driving cars are expected to change the way we get around. They are safer and more environmentally friendly than regular cars. They can remove the stress(压力) of driving and allow disabled or blind people to get around more easily.
But self-driving cars have their own disadvantages as well. In one test, researchers pointed a laser pointer (激光棒) at the car's sensors (感应器) while it was moving. The car mistakenly thought that the laser beam (波束) was in its way and slowed down or changed directions.
The software (软件) that is used to direct the cars may not be safe enough. Reported Live science. Sometimes, without any reasons, it may break down when we use out computers or smart phones. If the software in a self-driving car happened to crash, the results could be deadly. Maybe improvements to the software could solve this problem.

Time Management
Do you ever wish you had more time? Everyone gets the same amount of time each day. But here are some ways to use those hours better. As a popular saying says, "Work smarter, not harder."
The most important way to manage your time is to set priorities(优先权).{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Also, consider whether or not they are urgent—if they need to be done right away. It can be easy to forget important tasks that aren't urgent, so make time for them.
Decide ahead of time what you're going to do at certain times each day. Schedule times not only to meet people but also to do things alone. Then you can make sure everything gets done.
{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Are you smarter in the morning, afternoon or evening? Schedule difficult tasks for times you feel good, saving easy ones for when you're tired.
Write down what you need to do and when. I keep two to-do lists: one for the present tasks and one for larger projects I'm working on.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} And I don't get discouraged by looking at a long list of items I can't finish. I focus on the shorter list of each day's tasks.
{#blank#}4{#/blank#}When someone wants to give you a task, think carefully. Is it really important enough to spend your precious(宝贵的)time on? Could someone else do it instead?
{#blank#}5{#/blank#}If you're in charge of running a meeting, keep it short. Reading articles or talking to friends online can also use up much of your time. Don't allow it.
In the end, using time well is about making a good plan and sticking to it.
A. Think about the time of day you work best. B. That way I can make sure I don't forget anything. C. Figure out(弄明白)which of your tasks is the most important. D. Often, managing time means saying no to things that aren't so important. E. Meetings also tend to be a waste of time, so avoid them whenever possible. |
There are many people helping to take care of others in every country. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages (孤儿院) or the old people's homes.
They read books to the old people. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}For boys who don't have fathers, there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students take these boys to baseball games or take them to go on trips. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.
There are a number of clubs in some cities. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, the museums or other places of interest. Most of these clubs have a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they're young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls.
{#blank#}5{#/blank#}And they always do volunteer work happily.
A. Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help bring happiness to others. B. They also tell jokes to them and listen to their problems. C. They paint, clean up or repair the sick people's houses or do some shopping for them. D. People can play games or learn crafts (手工)in these clubs. E. They help these boys get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers. |
