Extreme weather seems to be everywhere these days. It is sometimes related to climate change. Yet it can be hard to see the effect on people's lives. I began documenting that effect in 2007, when I pictured two floods that occurred within weeks of each other, one in the U.K. and the other in India. I was deeply shocked by the different effects of these floods and the damage that their victims seemed to share.

Since then I have visited flood zones around the world. I travelled to many countries, like Australia, Thailand and Nigeria. In flooded places, life is suddenly turned upside down, and normal life is temporarily gone.

Photos are the most important in my research. I often follow people as they return home through deep waters, and work with them to take a close look at their flooded homes. Though their poses may be conventional, their environment is changed. The change makes them upset. Often they're       about their circumstances or the improper response from the government. Many want their sufferings to be seen and want the world to know what has happened to them.

I shoot on film with old Rolleiflex cameras. Digital would be easier, but the texture of film has a particular quality for me. The use of an old camera makes the situation more formal and serious.

In many cultures, the flood is described as a destructive force in old stories. It makes humans feel powerless. As weather becomes more extreme, the story in the Bible(圣经) is becoming literal.

Confucius was born around 551 B.C.in China.That was over 2,500 years ago.Some say that Confucius was born into a rich family.Others say he was born poor.One thing is clear:Confucius lived during a time of great trouble.

Philosophy(哲学)and Teachings

Different groups in China were fighting.People forgot about good manners(礼仪).This made Confucius sad.He wanted people to be kind and polite to each other.He believed in the idea of"ren".That means "loving others"."People should follow the Golden Rule,"he said.The Golden Rule is"to treat others as you would like to be treated".He believed that a good leader should treat his followers with care.This would help the leader set a good example.Confucius thought leaders could make people follow the law(法律)

____.

Confucius promoted(提倡)music education.He thought music had a strong influence on people and believed that music could make the things on the earth get on well with each other.

So music made it possible for our society to develop well.

Death

Confucius died at the age of 71 or 72.After his death,he was honored as a man of wisdom.His ideas helped shape the Chinese government.Today he is known as one of the most important teachers in Chinese history.

 阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出一个最佳选项。

The kites in Weifang never disappoint. Every year the Weifang International Kite Festival amazes visitors with creative kites, as "paper birds" of varied designs keep appearing in the sky.

Kites in China can originate from the Warring States Period when Mozi made the first "wooden kite". Kites didn't actually become popular until the Ming Dynasty. By the middle of the Qing Dynasty, artists who were good at kite making began to appear in Weifang. In 1984, the first Weifang International Kite Festival was held.

Kites were used in China during the wars at the very beginning. For example, they can be used to record wind readings, similar to ship flags at sea. Over time, kites became connected with relaxing activities, and were often flown during festivals and holidays.

Today, kite-flying is a popular activity in China, and the Weifang International Kite Festival is one of the largest kite festivals in the world. In 2024, 622 kite artists from 59 countries and areas took part in the event. Zhang Xiaodong,74, has attended all the festivals. In the early days, he only brought traditional kites to take part in the competitions, but this time, he used sound and light to make the story of Chang'e flying to the moon come "alive".

The festival is a great platform to share kite-making skills. It also brings the people of China and other countries closer. As one citizen put it, "No matter how far away kite lovers go, there is always a 'thread' in their heart that can pull them together."

As the weather gets warmer,there are few things that are better to do than travel.But traveling might not be that fun for everyone,especially for those who have motion sickness(晕动症).

Motion sickness is also called travel sickness.It is a common experience for many people.Depending on how you travel,it can be called carsickness or seasickness.People with motion sickness feel very uncomfortable while they are in motion.They feel sick and dizzy,like the room around them won't stop spinning.

It is generally believed that motion sickness happens when your senses become confused (困惑的)with each other,Scientific American reported.

We use different parts of our body to sense movement.Our eyes tell us if we are moving.The inner ears (内耳) contain a special liquid that helps us sense our direction and balance.Our muscles react to movement.

When you move around,these body parts work well together.But when you are in a car or an airplane,they get confused.Your inner ear signals that you're moving.This mismatch gives us motion sickness.

But some people are less sensitive to motion sickness.This may be because they have certain genes (基因) that prevent mismatching senses,Bethann Hromatka,told the Atlantic.

Although there are many ways to deal with motion sickness,scientists believe that the key is to simply try to adapt to it.For example,some astronauts do special exercises that give them mild motion sickness.After a week or two,the astronauts become used to it and don't feel uncomfortable anymore,a NASA flight doctor,told the BBC.
