During lunchtime, Emma suggested going to the zoo to feed the animals and her mom agreed.

"We'll stop by the bakery and pick some bread up. Now hurry and eat and then we'll go. It's going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She'll be here any minute,' mom said.

Emma ate her lunch and then ran into her room to get her shoes. The problem was that she could only find one of them. She looked under her bed, but all she could see were dirty towels and pants. She moved some of her toys out of the way, but still couldn't find her shoe. After she'd checked everywhere in her room, she ran into the kitchen. "Mom, I can't find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?"she asked.

Her mom thought about how many times she'd told Emma to clean her room up. She whispered something to Emma's grandma and then said to Emma, "You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take Ryan to the zoo. Grandma will stay here with you."

"No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the zoo,"Emma cried. "I'm sorry, Emma. I've told you a dozen times to clean your room and you ignored me. You can't find your shoe now. It's your own fault for not doing as I asked. You will stay home."

Emma ran into her bedroom, crying. Her mom came to the door and said, "Emma, clean that room of yours before I get home. I've told grandma not to give you any sweets until you finish the work." She went out to the car with Ryan and Emma's dad and then they drove away.

On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.

Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.

Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。

Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.

At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

Jenny was the only child in her family. She had a quarrel with her mother that afternoon and she ran out of the house angrily. She couldn't help weeping(哭泣) sorrowfully(悲伤地) when she thought of the scolding(责骂) from her mother. Having wandered(游荡) aimlessly in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand(货摊) for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she gave a sigh(叹气) and had to leave. The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, "Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?" "Oh, yes, but I don't have money on me," she replied.

"That's nothing. I'll treat you today," said the man "Come in." The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, the smell so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently. "What is it?" asked the man kindly. "Nothing. Actually I was just touched by your kindness!" said Jenny as she wiped(擦拭) her tears. "Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless(无情的) compared to a stranger!" Hearing the words, the seller smiled, "Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude(感激) to her?" Jenny sat there, speechless and numb(麻木的) with shock; she remembered her mother's familiar face and weathered (变形)hands. "Why didn't I think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel indebted(感激的). Why haven't I thanked my mum for what she has done for me?" On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home.

When I was ten I was suddenly very sad, for I had to move from the only home I had ever known. My whole life had been spent in that big old house which saw the laughter and tears of four generations.

When the final day came, I ran to the front of the house and sat alone, crying. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. I looked up to see my grandfather. " It isn't easy, is it, Billy?" he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me.

"Grandpa," I replied how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?"

"Goodbye is such a sad word," he said. "It seems too final, too cool, which has one thing in common: sadness."

He gently took my hand in his." Come with me, my friend," he whispered.

We walked, hand in hand, to his favorite place in the front yard, where there was a huge red rose bush — his beloved rose bush.

"What do you see here, Billy?" he asked.

I looked at the flowers, not knowing what to say," I see something beautiful, Grandpa."

"It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so." His eyes met mine again." Billy, I planted these roses a long time ago—before your mother was even a dream. I put them into the soil the day my first son was born. It was my way of saying thank you to God. That boy's name was Billy. I used to watch him pick roses for his mother.

I saw my grandfather's tears. I had never seen him cry before. His voice became hoarse(嘶哑的).

"One day a terrible war came, and my son, like so many sons, went away to fight a great evil. He and I walked to the train station together... Three months later a telegram came. My son had died in Italy. All I could think of was that the last thing I say to him in his life was goodbye."

I was a mother of four children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always valuable, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes in the wardrobe. I always tell myself to be brave and strong. I hope all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children can grow up healthily. It was Christmas time. We drove downtown to see the Christmas lights, and enjoyed a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of Christmas shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all looked forward to the coming of the season of goodwill. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for Christmas.

The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty -dollar bill and asked them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (分散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a café waiting for my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.

Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about Christmas, laughing and asking each other about what they had bought. I noted Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars—fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I had given her? I was so angry. After getting home, I called her into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn't hold back my anger and shouted at her, "What about the rest of the money? No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What do you want to do with the rest of the money?"

Paragraph 1:

She was shocked at my reaction and burst into tears.

Paragraph 2:

    My anger disappeared.

December 16, 2009 was the worst day of my mother's life. It was on that day that she was told her thirty-six-year-old daughter had developed breast cancer. I would never forget her hopeless expression and tear-filled eyes as I told her. That scene uncontrollably broke my heart. It was one of the few times in my life that I had seen my mother was so painful and weak.

Since I got breast cancer, the doctors had made a heavy-duty plan to fight with it, which would mean an operation on my breast, five months of chemotherapy (化疗), and five weeks of radiation therapy. It also meant that an independent single girl who lived alone was in serious need of some help and care.

Thankfully, I was blessed with my own army of family, friends and co-workers who had offered to help me out with whatever I might need, including meals and rides to doctors' appointments. But as grateful as I was, there really was only one person who I wanted by my side — my mom. Despite living 300 miles away, my mother agreed even without a second thought. She was going to be my primary caregiver, driver, personal cook, nurse, counselor, and shoulder to cry on. No one else in the world could fill her shoes. It was a job that only she could do.

The night after my first chemotherapy treatment was firmly fixed in my memory. I was never so sick in my entire life. I couldn't even keep down a glass of water. And after hours spent in the bathroom, I weakly lifted myself into bed, weeping, "Please, God, take this away from me. Please make me fed better." At that moment, my mother crawled into bed with me and wrapped her entire body around me. It looked as if l had still been a little girl.

Paragraph 1:

Over the next six months, my mom traveled between two homes just to take care of me.

Paragraph 2:

However, when I finally began to recover, my morn suddenly fell ill.
