    If the rose can be said to be a special flower, then the apple can be said to be a special fruit. It is very important in American culture. American stories speak of Johnny Appleseed, who went throughout America collecting apple seeds and planting apple trees. He had a great love for nature and went through fields and farms adding richness and beauty to the country.
    One of the first sayings taught to school children is, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” This short saying encourages children to eat fresh fruit to keep healthy. If someone always says good words to a person, people will call him an “apple polisher”. This, however, is not a good name. If someone is very dear to us, we say that he or she is the “apple of our eye”.
    Most people believe that the fruit which Eve gave to Adam was an apple, even though the Bible(圣经) never says so. The apple, therefore, is a deep part of the language and stories of America.
    An apple is also delicious. Apples can be cooked in many ways, used as a dessert, and made into sweet juice.
    In many parts of the country during the harvest season, a popular activity is to go into an apple garden to pick apples. Washington, D. C. and New York are both famous for their apples.

 Birthday Traditions in Different Countrles

 England

Certain symbolic objects are mixed into the birthday cake as it's being prepared. If your piece of cake has a coin in it,then you will be rich. Also, when it's your birthday,your friends give you the“bumps".They lift you in the air by your hands and feet and raise you up and down to the floor;one for each year you lived,then another one or two for luck.

 Denmark

A flag is flown outside a window to show that someone who lives in that house is having a birthday. Presents are placed around the child's bed while he/she is sleeping,so he/she will see them at once upon awakening.

 Holland

 Special year birthdays such as 5,10,15,20,21 are called“crown”years.The birthday child receives an especially large gift on a crown year birthday.The family also decorates the birthday child's chair at the dining room table with flowers,paper streamers and balloons.

 Canada

 The birthday child's nose is greased(涂抹)with butter for good luck.The greased nose makes the child too slippery for bad luck to catch him/her.In some parts of Canada,the birthday person even receives a punch(一拳)for each year he/she is alive and then one for good luck.

 Brazil

 The birthday child receives a pull on the ear for each year he/she has been alive.The birthday person also gives the first plece of cake to his/her most special friend or relative,usually mom or dad.

 Korea

 There is a big family party on the first birthday.The table is set with food,and four items:a pencil,a ruler,thread,and money. The item that the baby chooses is said to forecast his/her future:excellent student,good with hands,long life or riches.

 South Africa

 On the twenty-first birthday,a key made of anything from paper to silver to gold is presented by the parents as a sign that the child is ready to unlock the door to their future.

    It is now believed that the game of snooker(斯诺克) was invented by Sir Neville Francis Fitzgerald Chamberlain in 1875 in Jubbulpore, India.
The rules of world snooker have been improved to a fine degree. There are six pockets in the table. Two in each corner of one end, known as the top pockets, and two in each corner of the other end, known as the bottom pockets, and the final two in the middle of the longer sides, known as the center pockets. Different “spots”(地点) are signed on the table for the different colored balls. The values(分值) of the balls are red-1, yellow-2, green-3, brown-4, blue-5, pink-6, and black-7. The cue(球杆) must be no less than 914mm long. Snooker may be played by two or more players, either independently or as sides.
    Snooker is a big sport in China. There are 300 million snooker players there, which is more than the rest of the world put together. So it's no surprise that some of the world's best players come from China. They have been showing off their talent at the World Snooker Championship, which takes place every year in the UK at the Crucible Theatre in the northern English city of Sheffield. And it is the most important event in professional snooker. This year four of the contenders(冠军争夺者) for World Snooker Champion were Chinese – Marco Fu, Liu Chuang, Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo. Liu Chuang and Liang Wenbo were making their debut(首次亮相) in Sheffield this year, in fact. And they did quite well in the game.

F. These words can make a difference between going on and giving up.

It truly doesn't take much to encourage others and, best of all it's very affordable and requires no special tools. Here are some simple ways to encourage others.

☆Take an interest.

I believe this is one of the most practical ways of encouraging others. Show that you' re interested in what they' re doing. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} People like to talk about themselves and once you get them talking, you fire up their enthusiasm(热情).

☆Acknowledge(肯定) a job well done.

 Great achievements take time and effort. You can encourage others by acknowledging their effort. A simple" well done" or" thank you" can be useful. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

☆Lend a hand.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} In fact, you can be the first one to offer to lend a hand. If a person sees you are willing to spend your time and energy on their interests, they will be more encouraged to see it through and less likely to give up.

☆ {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

 Thank someone when he/ she does something for you. Thank your partner after he/ she cooks a nice meal. Thank a friend for lending you a book. A simple" thank you" lets others know what they have done is meaningful to you.

☆Give a call to your friend.

 As you know, we' re all busy, and in the age of emails and texts, phone calls seem ancient to

many people. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Even if they miss the call they' ll appreciate the effort and your message. Make an effort to do this just once a week for one person and see how your connections respond to the encouragement.
