It is widely accepted that television is playing an important part in people's lives. But, there is a heated discussion as to whether television does good or harm.
Television keeps one learning more about present events, allows one to follow the most recent developments in politics and science, and offers various programs which are .both instructive and exciting. The most distant countries, the strangest customs and the most attractive scenes of nature are brought right into one's room or house.
However, some people insist that television is bad rather than good. They argue that it has brought about many serious problems. The major one is its effects on young people. Children are now so used to getting their information and entertainment from television that their ability to read and write as well as physical ability has been greatly weakened. Even worse than that, vulgar( 庸俗的) advertisements and poor programs may develop their bad tastes, shape their view points badly towards human life to such a degree that their minds might be destroyed.
In a word, television has both advantages and disadvantages. Whatever effects it has, one point is certain, television in itself is neither good nor bad. It is the use to which it is put that decides its value to society.

①You may not know it, but there are vampires (吸血鬼) in your house right now. Luckily, they do not drink the blood of living people. Instead, these vampires quietly drain the electricity right out of your home. They come in the form of common electrical devices (家用电器), such as TVs, washing machines, computers and cell phone chargers(充电器). They all turn into energy vampires when you stop using them.

②We all know it wastes energy to leave lights or air conditioners on when we leave a room. However, we don't think about the devices that are always on, even when they appear to be powered down. Many are designed to stay on for convenience. Our TVs are always ready to receive a signal from the remote control, and our computers are ready to wake up at the touch of a button(按钮). But this convenience comes at the cost of higher electricity bills. These increased power bills are especially unwelcome when you consider the sharp rise in energy prices over recent years. Therefore, it is certainly worth looking at ways to reduce your electricity bills.

③Thankfully, there is a way to fight these vampires so that they no longer feed on your wallet. The easiest method is to simply unplug (拔掉插头) your devices when you're not using them. However, this may cause a little trouble if you want to use things like washing machines, fridges or TVs.

④Another way to fix the problem is by connecting your devices to a power strip. This works well for things like cell phone chargers and computers. When you're not using them, just cut off the whole power strip.

⑤In fact, the best way to kill energy vampires is to avoid as many of them as you can. Many devices have a level that shows how energy-efficient they are. Throw away your old devices, use newer ones that have a higher level and then you will watch your electricity bills drop.

⑥Stopping energy vampires makes a difference to more than just your bills, though. It reduces everyone's total electricity use, which is better for the environment. If you want to     ▲    , start hunting those energy vampires in your house today!
