Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing(令人迷惑的). Some Americans who taught English in other countries recently talked about their experiences.

She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.
Jane remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria(保加利亚), a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jane waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. Some nod and others shake. Have you ever stayed in a hotel? Most Chinese hotels often provide guests with things like disposable (一次性的) toothbrushes, shampoo and slippers, Many guests like the i{#blank#}1{#/blank#} because they don't have to bring their own. But, if you travel to Beijing, remember to ring your own things. Starting from June, some hotels in Beijing will no l{#blank#}2{#/blank#} provide guests with these disposables. They want to ask people to use fewer disposable things.

Many disposable things are made of plastic, People throw them away after only u{#blank#}3{#/blank#} them once. It is a waste of natural resources (资源) and is very bad for the environment. Do you know, one Chinese person makes as much as 400kg of waste a year! Most of the waste comes from disposable things. In Beijing, people throw away about 19, 000 tons of plastic bags and 1, 320 tons of plastic lunch bowls every year! Plastic can take between 100 and 400 years to break down. So the l{#blank#}4{#/blank#} plastic we throw out, the better. So, wherever you travel, bring your own things and use them again and again.

Back at hole and school, you can a{#blank#}5{#/blank#} do something to make our world a better place. Try to do these things in your daily life: Use cloth shopping bags, not plastic ones, After you use a plastic bag, wash it out and let it d{#blank#}6{#/blank#}. Then you can use ti over and over again. Do not use paper cups. At your school canteen, use your own bowl and chopsticks instead of disposable ones.
