Peter was getting ready to graduate from the college. He loved a beautiful sports car for many months, and knew his father could well afford it for him. He told his father all that he wanted.
As the graduation day was coming near, Peter had got nothing from his father. On the morning of his graduation, his father called him into his study. He told his son how proud he was to have such a good son, and told how much he loved him. Then he gave his son a beautiful gift box. He opened the box, finding a lovely book, a Bible(圣经), with the young man's name in it. Angrily he raised his voice to his father and said, “With all your money you give me a Bible?” He then ran out of the house, leaving the Bible.
Many years later, Peter was very successful in business. He had a beautiful house and a wonderful family. Realizing his father was old, he thought he should go to see him. He had not seen him since that graduation day. Unfortunately, he was told that his father had died.
When he reached his father's house, he began to take care of his father's papers. And then he found the Bible, just as he had left it years ago. With tears, he opened it and began to turn the pages. As he was reading, from the back of the Bible dropped a car key. That was the key to the sports car he wanted so much. Sudden sadness and regret (悔恨)filled his heart.
Sometimes we don't realize the good luck that we already have because we don't know the gift box is packed in a different way. The gift box may be the door to happiness. It is just waiting for us to open.

Ryan's life was nearly perfect. He had lots of friends on his block. They walked to school together every day, and after school they always had time to play.

Ryan did have one problem. It was his two-year-old sister, Allie. She was too small to play ball games. She couldn't climb trees yet.  Ryan and his friends didn't want her around.

Ryan tried asking his mum to keep Allie at home. "Why does my sister have to come along?" he asked. "Troy's sister doesn't. Jimmy's sister doesn't. Why me?"

Ryan's mother just laughed, "Troy's sister is only six months old, and Jimmy doesn't have a sister. Allie is nice, isn't she?"

Today, Ryan was going to play baseball with his friends after school. Allie followed him as usual. The boys used to play football, but one of them broke a window at Mr Mcwhirter's house. Mr Mcwhirter wouldn't give them their ball back.

The game got started. Allie sat on a stone nearby. Minutes later it was Jimmy's turn to hit the ball. Unluckily, it fell right into Mr Mcwhirter's yard.

The boys ran over to Mr Mcwhirter's fence (栅栏). The ball was just out of reach.

"None of us can fit through the fence." Jimmy said.

    The boys looked glum.

Suddenly, Jimmy got an idea. "Allie, come over!" he called. "Would you like to get that ball for us?"

Allie looked at the boys. Then she slipped through the fence, picked up the ball and came back out of the yard.

"Wow," said Troy. "So quick! Thanks, Allie."

    "Nice job," said Jimmy.

"Come on," said Ryan, suddenly proud of his kid sister. "I'll teach you how to swing the bat."

 D. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答问题)

Eric was standing in front of a large grey house in the countryside. He had just been dropped off by his mum, who left after telling him that he was going to spend the next twelve days there with no TV, no mobile phone and — worse of all — no computer.

Suddenly, a man appeared at the entrance of the house. When he saw Eric, he went up to him immediately. 'You must be Eric. Welcome to the camp,' said the man confidently. 'I'm Tony, the camp leader, but you will call me "Sir". Now tell me why you're here.'

Eric quickly replied, 'My mum made me come!' When Tony looked at him angrily and did not say anything, Eric realized his mistake and added, 'Sir!'

'And do you know why your mother sent you here?' asked Tony.

'She thinks I spend too much time online. Sir,' answered Eric. 'It's not just her opinion — it's the truth! Look at you — pale, unfit, and definitely not getting enough sleep. You're here because you think the virtual world is much better than the real world. But you're wrong! The real world has much more to offer. At the camp, you're going to go hiking, rowing, rock-climbing and stay outdoors most of the time,' promised Tony.

Eric'heart sank.

'But it's not going to be all fun and games,' Tony continued. 'We have rules here. If you break them, you'll get punished. But you won't simply get detention (课后留校), and you can forget about suspension (停学) — you'll never be sent home early! Instead, you'll clean the toilets, wash the dishes or do an extra hour of exercise!'

'Oh Mum,' sighed Eric. 'What have you got me into?'
