    Fraser Island is in Queensland, Australia, about 200 kilometers north of Brisbane. It is about 120 kilometers long and 240 kilometers wide. It is a very important island because it is completely made of sand. In fact, it is the largest sand island in the world. There is no airport on the island, but there is a long beach along the east coast. Planes arrive and leave from here.

    The sand makes unusual shapes. There are hills made of sand called sandblows. Nothing grows on them. They move one or two meters a year from the northwest towards the southeast of the island, getting bigger and bigger. At other places on the island, such as Rainbow Gorge, The Cathedrals and Red Canyon, the sandy rocks have different colors. Sometimes the rocks are so brown that they turn the sea brown, like coffee.

    Surprisingly, the sandy island has a lot of different plants and animals. There are dark forests—eucalyptus woods, beautiful flowers and over a hundred lakes. There are many kinds of birds, like owls and curlews. There are many animals there, too, such as crocodiles, flying foxes and wild dogs called dingoes.

    About 500,000 people visit the island every year to see the island's beauty and nature. People enjoy camping and hiking（徒步）there. Unluckily, the visitors create problems. They damage plants and frighten animals. Their sun cream（防晒霜）makes the water dirty. So it is necessary to manage the visitors. For example, people may not use motor boats or go fishing in the lakes, and they need official papers to drive there.

    When some plates(板块)of the Earth move suddenly, an earthquake happens. Many earthquakes begin under the sea. Earthquakes may happen anywhere on the Earth. They often happen near the mountains.

    During an earthquake, the shakings make rocks rise suddenly and even crack(断裂) open. Houses fall down. People are killed or hurt, and sometimes the whole villages or cities are destroyed.

    Can we do something to keep ourselves safe from earthquakes? Scientists have studied earthquakes and made maps that show the “earthquake belt（带）”. In area of these belts, it's possible for earthquakes to happen. In these areas we should build strong houses to fight against earthquakes.

    In the future, Scientists will be able to tell when and where an earthquake will attack before it happens. They can also tell people what to do and how to deal with it.

Crowdsourcing is the process of using many people to perform services. Crowdsourcing explains the saying "many hands make light work" in a new way. At the same time, crowdsourcing follows the old saying that "two heads are better than one". When many people work together on a project, they not only work faster, but they also work better. 

There is a community learning website called Memrise, which offers more than 6, 000 free educational courses in all types of subjects. The courses, which are created by volunteers, include photos, videos, games and quizzes to help people learn quickly and have fun at the same time. 

London's Tate Museum is another good example of crowdsourcing. In 2010, the museum started the Tate Movie Projectwebsite, where children learned how animated（动画的） films are made. The children also wrote stories, drew their own characters and sent them to the website. After that, professional animators worked with the children to compete a film called The ltch oftheGolden Nit. The film was shown on BBC television. 

In fact, as students, crowdsourcing can also be a way for you to deal with problems. Suppose your teacher asks you to create a magic story. And you have written a story, but you're not sure whether it's fun or not. What can you do? Just let others around you, your classmates, your parents or someone else, read it and offer their ideas. Then you will collect some wonderful ideas!
