School started again, and soon the ink(墨水)in Tom's spelling book was found. Tom said he hadn't split the ink, but that made it look as if he were lying. Becky almost said Alfred Temple had done it, but she kept quiet. She thought that Tom would tell the teacher about her tearing(撕)his book, so she didn't save him. Mr Dobbins beat him and then Tom went back to his seat。

After an hour Mr Dobbins unlocked his desk and took out his book, Tom looked over at Becky. She looked like a hunted and helpless rabbit. The next moment the master faced the children. There was a long silence, then he spoke, "Who tore this book?"

There wasn't a sound. The teacher searched their faces.

"Benjamin Rogers, did you do it?"

Benjamin said no.

"Joseph Harper, did you?"

Joseph also said no. Dobbins looked at the rows of boys, thought for a moment, then turned to the girls.

"Amy Lawrence?"

A shake of the head.

"Gracie Miller?"

The same sign.

Becky was next. Tom was shaking from head to foot.

"Rebecca Thatcher?"—(Tom looked at her face; it was white with terror)— "did you tear?—no, look at my face—did you tear this book?"

Tom jumped to his feet and shouted, "I did it!"

The children stared(盯着) in surprise at his foolish act.

And when he stepped forward for his punishment, he saw the surprise, the thanks, and the love that came from Becky's eyes. This was enough for one hundred beatings. And he didn't even mind staying for two hours after school, because he knew that Becky was waiting for him outside.

Tom went to bed that night planning some actions on Alfred Temple, for Becky had told him everything. And he fell asleep with Becky's last words to him in his ear, "Tom, you are so great!"

Eduardo reached into his backpack,searching for his mobile phone. He was tired of Aunt Letty spending all day on her chickens,goats,horses,and cows. Worse,he was afraid of having to spend the spring vacation on Aunt Letty's farm.

Although he disagreed,his parents decided that spending time on the farm would be a great experience for him. They grew up on a farm and believed that responsibility(责任),hard work,and respect for the land were valuable lessons.

"So,have you ever ridden a horse?"Aunt Letty asked,trying to turn his attention away from his phone. "Hmmm,no. "he answered. "Well,we've got a nice horse I think you'll like. "she said,smiling.

Eduardo was unhappy that he had to work. Vacations were meant for sleeping late,playing video games,and maybe skateboarding. Without lifting his head,he tried to text a friend.

"With all the hills and valleys, phones are hard to get a WIFI. "

Eduardo made a face, but Aunt Letty was right.

. The animals on the farm woke them up,and they had breakfast before sunrise. Then they had to feed the animals. The afternoons were filled with cleanup and caring for the animals. At sunset,when the farm was finally quiet,Aunt Letty reached out her arms and inhaled(吸气),"Just take a deep breath of that sweet country air!"Eduardo,tired from his chores,couldn't enjoy his work.

On the third day,Aunt Letty announced, "It's time to meet Hercules. "She led Eduardo into the stables(马厩). Aunt Letty was right again. Hercules was amazing!

Aunt Letty held her hand open for Eduardo to take. Unwillingly(不情愿地),he let her guide his hand towards Hercules and allowed the big animal to touch his hand. Softly,Hercules rubbed its nose and mouth against him.

"It feels like velvet(天鹅绒)!"Eduardo smiled. An hour later,Eduardo was offering Hercules carrots.

That night,as they headed towards the house,Eduardo was excited. His arms spreading wide,he inhaled and said,"Take a breath of that sweet country air!"

It was the first time in China that a short-finned pilot whale (短鳍领航鲸), a nationally second-class protected wild animal, was rescued and released into its natural habitat, thanks to the efforts of more than 200 people who joined hands to save the stranded(搁浅) creature.

It all began on Jan & rd, when the injured whale was seen stranded on the shores of Haitang Bay in Sanya, Hainan Province. Police, animal experts, and volunteers rushed to the scene, and managed to send the whale to the Sanya Haichang Animal Center. They named it Haitang, after the Haitang Bay where it was found.

At first, due to serious lung (肺部) injuries, Haitang faced the risk of turning over and drowning(溺水). To solve this, over 100 volunteers took turns to hold the whale all day long so that it would not turn over.

As it slowly recovered, the volunteers moved it to an outdoor pool for a larger space. Months later, its length grew 10 centimeters, as it was fed 14 kilograms of seafood every day.

In early May. experts believed that Haitang was ready to return to Mother Nature. After spending some time with human being, it was released into the ocean where it belongs on May25th. Although it was hard to say goodbye, rescuers believed that Haitang had found its group and lived in the area healthily.
