Many teachers believe that the responsibilities for learning lie with the student. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} a long reading assignment is given, instructors expect students to be familiar with {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (inform) in the reading even if they do not discuss it in class or take an examination. The ideal student is considered to be one who is motivated to learn for the sake of learning, not the one interested only in getting high grades. Sometimes homework is returned {#blank#}3{#/blank#} brief written comments but without a grade. Even if a grade is not given, the student is {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (responsibility) for learning the material assigned. When research {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (assign), the professor expects the student to take it actively and to complete it with minimum guidance. It is the student's responsibility to find books, magazines, and articles in the library. Professors do not have the time to explain {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a university library works; they expect students, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (especial) graduate students, to be able to exhaust the reference origins in the library. Professors will help students who need it, but prefer that their students should not be too dependent on them. In the United States, professors have many other duties {#blank#}8{#/blank#} teaching, such as administrative or research work. Therefore, the time {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a professor can spend with a student outside of class {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (limit). If a student has problems with classroom work, the student should either approach a professor during office hours or make an appointment.

    World Read Aloud Day is celebrated each year on the first Wednesday of March. It {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(start) by the LitWorld. Org website in 2010 and has now reached 65 countries, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} aim is to encourage people worldwide who cannot read to enjoy the benefits of a book. The website asks everyone {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (celebrate) the day by taking a book, finding an audience, and reading out aloud. It is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (belong) to all people.

        The website asks visitors to join in the movement to reduce the number of illiterate (不识字的) people in the world. It is {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (absolute) necessary to help those who cannot read. The website says, “It's time to start by reading aloud to {#blank#}6{#/blank#} might like it. Share a book with a child who might need it, share a story with someone who would treasure it, listen patiently {#blank#}7{#/blank#} someone else's story as they share with you.” The United Nations says, “Literacy involves a variety of learning in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (able) individuals to achieve their goals, to develop their knowledge, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} to participate fully in society.”  In that way, World Read Aloud Day {#blank#}10{#/blank#} help make a difference.

    Last summer holiday, I took part in a teaching project and volunteered{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(teach) in a countryside primary school for two weeks.

    When we arrived at the school, though shocked by the poor living conditions, we quickly adapted {#blank#}2{#/blank#} to the life there. My good friend Tom and I were in charge of the third year students, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(consist) of just 18 boys and girls. We not only taught them English and maths, but also organized some after-school {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(activity) for them. Gradually, I found that many of the students were actually quite 6{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(talent). But some had to leave school early, which is{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(large) because their families were under heavy financial pressure, and they had to find a job to support the family.

    As well as giving lessons, we also helped set up a reading room in the school {#blank#}7{#/blank#} students hardly had any access{#blank#}8{#/blank#} good reading materials except textbooks. With the help of school staff and students, we cleaned out an abandoned classroom. When we placed the books students and teachers in my high school {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(donate) onto the shelves, I found the students were more than excited and {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(dive) into reading there.

    Two weeks quickly passed and we had to leave. I did not know how much we had actually taught them, but for me I learned a great deal—cherish what I possess and study harder.

    One Saturday morning in September I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (go) to a local music festival. I left it early{#blank#}2{#/blank#} I had an appointment later that day. My friends walked me to the bus stop and waited with {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (I) until the bus arrived. I got on the bus and found a seat near the back, and then I noticed a man {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (sit) at the front. He pretended that a tiger toy was real and giving it a voice. He must be {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (mental) disabled.

    Behind him {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (be) other people to whom he was trying to talk, but after some {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (minute) he walked away and sat near me, looking annoyed. I didn't want 3{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (laugh) at for talking to him but I didn't like leaving him on his own either. After a while I rose from my seat and walked to the front of the bus. I sat next {#blank#}9{#/blank#} the man and introduced myself. We had {#blank#}10{#/blank#} amazing conversation. He got off the bus before me and I felt very happy the rest of the way home.

    I'm glad I made the choice. It made both of us feel good.

    Dujiangyan is the oldest man-made water system in the world, and a wonder in the development of Chinese science.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(build) over 2, 200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(achieve) is still used today.

    In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now stands{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(suffer) from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(help) the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(good) still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making {#blank#}6{#/blank#}suitable for farming.

    Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (peaceful). Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature. Unlike modern dams{#blank#}8{#/blank#} the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally,{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (enable) ecosystem(生态系统) and fish populations to exist {#blank#}10{#/blank#}harmony.

    It is a great{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(true) that life is difficult. Once we really understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, most of us do not fully see it. They just complain about their problems and difficulties as if life should be easy.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a really painful one. Problems, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(base) on their nature, cause sadness or regret or anger or fear. These are {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(comfort) feelings, often as painful as any kind of physical pain. It is in the whole process of solving problems {#blank#}6{#/blank#} life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells us success from failure. When we want to strengthen the growth of human spirit, we encourage the human ability {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(solve) problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to deal with. {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(learn) from the pain of meeting and working out problems is{#blank#}9{#/blank#}great benefit. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Those things that hurt, instruct.” For this reason, wise people learn not to fear but to welcome{#blank#}10{#/blank#} pain of problems.
