Many birds live in Zhalong all year {#blank#}1{#/blank#}, while some go there for a short {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. Most birds are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} in the daytime, so you can easily watch {#blank#}4{#/blank#} there. There are not many cranes {#blank#}5{#/blank#} in the world, and 40 percent of them live in Zhalong.

Some people want to make the wetlands smaller in order to have more {#blank#}6{#/blank#} for farms and{#blank#}7{#/blank#}. This will {#blank#}8{#/blank#} to less and less space for wildlife. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}, fishermen keep fishing there. As a result, the birds do not have enough food to eat. Now the Chinese {#blank#}10{#/blank#} has made laws to prevent all these things in Zhalong.

    I am Jackie Lee, an American Chinese. Let me tell you about my grandfather's life story.

    My grandfather was b{#blank#}1{#/blank#} in 1932 and grew up in a poor village in Fujian, China. At the age of 14, he first heard of America. It was said to be the land of gold and poor people could easily become r{#blank#}2{#/blank#} there.

    So, my grandfather came to America. “I thought it was easy to m{#blank#}3{#/blank#} money in America,” he told me, “But when I a{#blank#}4{#/blank#} in Los Angeles, I realized it was not true. I couldn't find a good job because I spoke little English. I wanted to go to a language school to learn English, b{#blank#}5{#/blank#} I couldn't pay for it. Later, I worked in a small r{#blank#}6{#/blank#}, serving the guests, cleaning up the tables, washing the dishes and sweeping the floors. I was s{#blank#}7{#/blank#} a helpful and honest worker that my boss（老板）was happy with me. I was popular with my workmates, t{#blank#}8{#/blank#}. Life became easier and in the end I entered an evening school to learn English.”

    My grandfather kept working hard, and finally made h{#blank#}9{#/blank#} dream come true. Things do not come easily in life. That is what I have learned f{#blank#}10{#/blank#} my grandfather.

    I was studying in Los Angeles , the USA . It is a big city with {#blank#}1{#/blank#} people living in it than in my whole country . I come from Singapore . It is one of the smallest {#blank#}2{#/blank#} in the world . We rented（租）a flat in a community near a favela（贫民窟）.

    For several months I did not have a car , so three times a week I used public transportation（交通）to go to the city centre . During these trip . I would ride with the people who took the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} bus from the favela to work .

    When I got on the bus , all the seats were already taken . But when people saw that my bag was very heavy , they offered to hold it on their lap（范围）to{#blank#}4{#/blank#} me feel lighter（轻松）. At first , I was{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Then I realize that these people did not want to steal（偷盗）from me they only wanted to help me .

    Once , on my way back , I had to wait {#blank#}6{#/blank#} a long time at a bus stop . I was alone , expect for a woman who was very poor . She carried a small paper bag of popcom and nothing else . While we were waiting , she walked over and gave me some popcom . I thank her , but did not want to help{#blank#}7{#/blank#} to it . She then insisted（要求）that I should take some from what was evidently（明显地）her only food .

I wonder {#blank#}8{#/blank#} it is true that the more you have, the more difficulties you will have to share anything with others .

    During the long summer holidays, many children go to holiday camps. Emily Harris wrote about{#blank#}1{#/blank#} experience looking after children at Kingfishers Holiday Camp, in Salisbury.

    This summer will be my third time to be at the camp here, but I've been to{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Kingfisher camps all over Britain. I've made a lot of friends through this summer job. It's perfect for teenagers {#blank#}3{#/blank#}me. After all, summer holidays are great,{#blank#}4{#/blank#} they are long and they can get boring! We are busy doing this job all the time and we get paid!

    I help the sports and activity teachers, so I{#blank#}5{#/blank#} time with different groups of children, and by the end of the week, I usually know most of them well.

    The best part is when the children try {#blank#}6{#/blank#}new, like boating or climbing. I love seeing their excitement. It's really enjoyable and it makes you feel you are {#blank#}7{#/blank#} a good job. Also when they play a team game, and the other team wins, instead of feeling unhappy, we teach them to{#blank#}8{#/blank#}hands and say ＂Congratulations!＂ to the winners. This gives me a real feeling of success.

    As I said before, it isn't just the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}who make great new friends! Working together so closely, even for just a few weeks, the helpers at our camp become really good {#blank#}10{#/blank#}.
