Kwanzaa（宽扎节）is a celebration of African American history and culture. It begins on December 26th and continues until New Year's Day, January 1st.

    During the festival, a family member, usually the youngest child, lights candles in a special candle holder. Each night a candle is lit. Traditionally there are three green candles, three red candles and a central black candle. They represent the seven Kwanzaa principles （原则）. The principles are believed to play a big role in building strong, successful families, neighborhoods, etc. In the evenings, adults share stories and explain how to follow the seven principles in daily life. On the sixth day, which falls on New Year's Eve, family and friends get together to enjoy a large meal.

    Kyle, a third grader, wrote this about Kwanzaa, "When we celebrate Kwanzaa, we have many people at home, light the candles, and have a nice dinner. We learn the meaning of Kwanzaa and remember family members. We say something good about them. Last year, we remembered my grandmother. "

    In 1966, Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa. He was studying the history of Africa at that time. Dr. Karenga wanted to create a holiday to bring African Americans together and celebrate their history and culture. He called the holiday" Kwanzaa". In fact, the name comes from an African language, and it means" first fruits of the harvest （收获季节）".

About 75% of the world's population will live in cities by 2050, so cities will need to be more modern to solve the coming problems. "Making cities smarter is one way out, and I think this will in turn make cities greener." said Dan Hill, head of a research company.

Chinese researchers reached the top of Qomolangma on May 4th, 2022. They set up the world's highest automatic(自动的)weather station at an altitude(海拔)of 8,830 meters. The station helps Chinese scientists to directly collect data (数据) from the top of the world's highest mountain and study the effects of climate (气候) change on the environment. 

Collecting and studying data from Qomolangma is not easy. But the data will give valuable information about the condition of local glaciers（冰川）and mountain snow. The water from the glaciers and mountain snow has been the source(源头)for over 10 main rivers in Asia and it has fed more than 2. 5 billion people 

It will also help scientists study and understand the global monsoon system (全球季风系统),so experts can make proper decisions about climate change and sustainable(可持续的)development. 

With the efforts of Chinese government and many years hard work by scientists, China has become a global front—runner in fields related to the Qinghai —Tibetan Plateau.

Save Energy, Save the Earth

The earth is the only home for everyone on it. It's crying for our help now. 

①Giethoorn is a magical village in northern Netherlands. It's so fantastic that some people have a hard time believing it's real. Although the small village has no roads or cars, it has plenty of boats!

②Giethoorn's most noticeable feature(特色) is its canals(运河). They serve as the village's roads. With the feature, it gets another name" Dutch Venice". Local people get around by boat or bicycle, and if they have cars, they have to park them outside the village. Boats are certainly the most important ways of transportation(运输). Bridges connect most homes and businesses, but some houses can only be reached by water. That's why postmen have to send mails by boat. 

③The second thing that visitors notice is the quiet. With a population of just over 2, 700 and without any noisy traffic, the village is what many people call a quiet oasis(绿洲). "In Netherlands'water village, the loudest sound you can normally hear is the sound of a duck or the noise made by birds, " a villager there said. 

④But that isn't to say the village is not a popular place. In fact, it has become a place of interest, offering comfortable hotels and delicious meals at waterside restaurants.
