The development of the English language took a giant step in 1607. Three small British ships c{#blank#}1{#/blank#}  the Atlantic Ocean. They began to call areas of their new land by words borrowed from the native people. For example, many of the great r{#blank#}2{#/blank#} in the United States are taken from American Indian words. The Mississippi, the Tennessee, the Missouri are examples. This borrowing or adding of foreign words to English was a w{#blank#}3{#/blank#} of expanding(扩大)the language. The names of three days of the week are good examples of this. The people from Northern Europe honored three gods with a special day each week. The gods were Odin, Thor and Freya. Odin's-day became Wednesday in English, Thor's-day became T{#blank#}4{#/blank#}  and Freya's-day became Friday.
Experts cannot explain many English words. For h{#blank#}5{#/blank#}  of years, a dog was called a “hound.” The word is still u{#blank#}6{#/blank#}  but not as commonly as the word “dog.” English speakers just started using it. Other words whose origins are unknown i{#blank#}7{#/blank#} “fun,” “bad,” and “big.”
English speakers also continue to invent n{#blank#}8{#/blank#}  words by linking old words together. A good example is the words “motor” and “hotel.” Many years ago s{#blank#}9{#/blank#}  linked them together into the word “motel.” A motel is a small hotel near a road where people travelling in cars can stay for the night.
Other words come from the f{#blank#}10{#/blank#}  letters of names of groups or devices. For example, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is usually called NATO.

在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其通顺。每空格限填一词,首字母已给。

"Olyvia, love is simple. You don't have to do much to make someone happy. "That was what my mother said to me when I was a child. Over a year ago, I had a chance. My good friend Kaylee told me about her t{#blank#}1{#/blank#} to a small town called Gary, and how it was a life-changing experience. I made up my mind to go there myself.

When I told my parents about the decision, they didn't a{#blank#}2{#/blank#} at first. They said I didn't know much about the place. They were worried that it was not s{#blank#}3{#/blank#} for me to go there. Thankfully, after I explained my plan to them in detail, they said yes.

When our group arrived in Gary, I noticed how different the town was from where I lived. There were few stores or restaurants in the town; most had closed. So you would be very l{#blank#}4{#/blank#} if you could find a place to buy food or drinks. Houses were built on small hills. Many of them had broken doors or windows. My job was to help the local people to r{#blank#}5{#/blank#} houses.The work days were long and hot, but it was really good to see the houses taking on a new look day by day.

The children there were also different. They seemed to enjoy every moment in life though they were poor. The smallest things would make these kids happy. I couldn't find words to describe their j{#blank#}6{#/blank#} when they received an ice-cream, a ball or even a kiss. The community was like a big family. Everyone knew each other and was there when someone needed help.

I am so glad that I had this unforgetable experience. I truly learned the m{#blank#}7{#/blank#} of what my mother said. You don't need to do much to make a difference to others' lives.
